MOMA: SUR MODERNO

Exhibit Alert: We've often celebrated and explored the world of modern design here on Spy Vibe and I wanted to make sure Spy Vibers didn't miss this cool exhibit that launched last fall at the MOMA. Sur Moderno: Journey Into Abstraction is a fascinating look at South American artists in the post-war era who worked to break away from the confines of traditional structures- literally- by liberating their creations from the frame and finding new ways to free artistic expression. Just as Frank Stella and Alexander Calder in the US were experimenting with multi-dimensional work, Jesus Rafael Soto in Venezuela was creating multi-layered, op, and kinetic pieces like this Double Transparency (Doblo transparencia/1956), which really caught my eye. From the press release: "Breaking beyond the limits of the frame, pushing line into three-dimensional form, using movement and bold new shapes—with these techniques and more, South American artists revolutionized painting, sculpture, design, and architecture at midcentury. Sur moderno: Journeys of Abstraction—The Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Gift celebrates the radical ways that artists from Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, and Uruguay used abstraction to reinvent art and, in turn, transformed society and contemporary life. Through this comprehensive collection, the exhibition is a journey through the vibrant history of modern Latin American art and includes works by Lygia Clark, Gego, Hélio Oiticica, Jesús Rafael Soto, and more." Explore the show online at MOMA. Check out the two short videos below produced by for the exhibit. The first video features some interesting furniture design and architecture, which may be of particular interest to Spy Vibers. Enjoy!
