So I enjoyed catching an audio sample in 1995, when Towa Tei (of Deee-Lite) began his solo album, Future Listening, with a song called I Want to Relax, Please. I remember putting on the record when it came out and jumping up in excitement when I heard Mastroianni's voice. Tei began the album with a sample from the film's English language track, from a scene where Marcello checks into a road-side relaxing station- a futuristic, institutionalized bordello. Towa Tei's Future Listening showed a mixture of musical influences, including electronica, bossa nova, house, jazz, and pop. Top drawer musicians on the record included Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono of YMO, Bebel Gilberto, and Nomiya Maki of Pizzicato Five. Listen for Marcello and enjoy! FUTURE LISTENING: THE 10TH VICTIM
It's music monday. As many Spy Vibers will know, I have a real soft spot for the 1965 Elio Petri film, The 10th Victim, starring Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress. I caught the movie as a kid on a TV station out of NYC, before I ever saw a Bond film, and it established a template for me of the ultimate in groovy fashion, design, and music. I was fortunate to contribute the stills and poster gallery for the 2011 Blu-ray release by Blue Underground (see our secure Amazon store). The 10th Victim was #5 in our ultimate set countdown.
