PRADA VILLAINS

Prada's Fall 2012 show featured a diabolical collection of East German-inspired fashions. Donning the guise of villains, a number of A-list stars stopped the show with a maniacal catwalk strut worthy of the best 007 baddies. In the world of 007 movies, of course, evil masterminds have traditionally worn Nehru suits (see Spy Vibe's spotlight HERE), but these long frocks, reminiscent of military topcoats and trench coats, gave the collection a great vintage, formal vibe. Apparently many of the fabrics were not traditional (like denim), mixing the contemporary and past into what Miuccia Prada intended as a "parody of male power". Between the dramatic piano soundtrack chosen by Prada, the fur-like collars, and thick round glasses, the designs harkened back to the early part of the 20th Century. These brooding dudes would have been perfect in a Feuillade serial like Fantomas or Judex, on the set of a gothic horror, or hatching fiendish plots in a steampunk thriller. Gary Oldman, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brodie and other stars appear around 7:50 in the video below. Enjoy!

NEW UFO BLU-RAY

Greetings Spy Vibers! I've returned from my mission and I look forward to sharing some photographs soon! I wanted to give everyone a heads up about an exciting new Blu-ray from UK distributor Network. They are working on a huge restoration project to release the ultimate edition of Gerry Anderson's groovy Sci-Spy classic, UFO. Man, I can't wait to see those purple wigs and Nehru jackets in glorious hi-definition! As a teaser to their set launch, Network just put out a Blu-ray edition of Invasion UFO, the 90-minute movie cut from various episodes that was originally made for theatrical release in 1980. UFO BLU-RAY

Where else can you find silver miniskirts, purple wigs, Nehru jackets, space-age cars, sci-spy organ soundtracks, and a secret organization posing as a movie studio that battles alien spies? Gerry Anderson's first live-action TV show UFO (1970-71) is coming to Blu-ray! Exciting news this morning, Spy Vibers! UK distributor Network has just posted a teaser trailer on their website announcing a 2016 release. My earliest memories of the spy and sci-spy genre are of watching UFO, Batman, and Lost in Space around the age of four or five. UFO thrilled me with its hi-tech vehicles and Nehru fashion. To a young boy, SHADO leader Straker (Ed Bishop), with his perfectly quaffed white hair, cut a dapper dash as a futuristic action hero. Little did I know back then that one of the SHADO ladies was raising a little boy named Benedict Cumberbatch. And I admit the aliens in UFO were quite scary- especially when they brainwashed humans to act as spies and saboteurs! Who can you trust? A wonderful take on the classic invasion-paranoia convention. I didn't see the series in color until A&E's DVD release and was pleasantly surprised to discover how far the team had pushed the pop-art appeal.
