COLD WAR ARCHIE

Comic Saturday: Archie. Archie Comics began in the early 1940s during the popularity of the Andy Hardy movies. Readers have enjoyed the everyday hijinks of relatable characters like Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica for 70 years. I have not followed the stories, but I find the cover art interesting. The designs often serve as mini time-capsules  providing us a window into life during the various decades of production. In this sample of fun Cold War covers, we see evidence of pop culture phenomena like James Bond, Op Art, Mod fashion, The Beatles, and monster movies. Writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla launched the hit series, Afterlife With Archie, in 2013, which parodies the wholesome Archie universe with Zombie conventions. Today is Free Comic Book Day. Spy Vibers can pick up free books at their local comic shops, including Archie titles. Enjoy!
