UPDATES & SAUL BASS

Greetings, Spy Vibers! I hope everyone is staying safe and doing well. I finally wrapped up another school year recently and then taught a really fun summer comic art class for kids. Now grateful to have time to devote to working on my Spy Vibe book project. I've recently solved some questions I've had for a while about how to best organize the material, so unless I find more ways to complicate it (curiosity, you know), I think I'm in good shape to bang away at it for the next month. Some minor news re: my recent post about the Fleetway Secret Agent series: The Book Palace wrote back to say they are gathering up the issues as a first step to research the stories and artists, and then they will determine if they wish to do any collected editions. More news as it arrives. I recently "attended" a premiere on-line of a new doc about Pierre Cardin, which was really excellent: House of Cardin. Hopefully Spy Vibers will get to see it! The other bit that crossed my radar this week was a new blog post from the California Film Institute, who have done up a nice tribute to the great graphic designer and filmmaker, Saul Bass (1920-1996). In addition to a poster gallery (lots of Hitchcock and Kubrick), they've also assembled a fantastic collection of video clips celebrating his many movie title sequences, such as Vertigo and North By Northwest. Check it out here. There's also a great celebration of Bass at Art of the Title. Enjoy!

IKARIE XB1

Spy Vibers who enjoyed dancing in the Raumpatrouille Orion lounge yesterday should also check out Ikarie XB1. Produced in Czechoslovakia in 1963, this cult classic was adapted from The Magellanic Cloud by Stanislav Lem (Solaris) about the space-faring adventures of a colony ship. The film's production design, based on geometric white patterns over deep blacks, was a direct influence on the later Raumpatrouille. The film even included a lounge scene with "futuristic" dance moves. And like Lem's Solaris, the film shares aesthetics and pacing with 2001 A Space Odyssey Ikarie XB1 was released for the English-speaking market as Voyage to the End of the Universe in a slightly re-cut form. PAL DVD available on Amazon here. You can watch the film (no English subtitles) streaming on Archive.org here. In-depth discussions on DVDTalk here and Teleport City here. Thanks to agent Mark Hodgson at Black Hole Reviews for the heads up!

PETER SELLERS SET 3

Peter Sellers played a pivotal role in the history of comedy. His work as a character actor in The Goons, a group committed to thinking outside the box of convention, inspired a whole generation of English comedians and writers to shine a light on society and to push the boundaries of class and culture with a satirical edge. Sellers' gift for the surreal naturally linked him with what became a surrealism boom in the 1960s. Sellers' short film, The Running Jumping & Standing Still Film (1960), for surreal/comedy director, Richard Lester, helped to put the director on the Beatles' radar (George Martin produced records by Sellers and The Goons), and landed him the plum assignments, A Hard Day's Night (1964) and Help! (1965). Sellers continued to rise through the 1960s, playing lead parts in influential films like Dr. Strangelove (1964), Casino Royale (1967), The Pink Panther (1963), and Woody Allen's first feature script, What's New Pussycat (1965). He joined an all-star cast in 1966 to bring Alice in Wonderland to the BBC's Wednesday Play (which included a soundtrack by Ravi Shankar!).

During the mid-1960s, Peter Sellers explored a number of Beatles songs as spoken comedy records. Spy Vibe spotlights the great Peter Sellers' set of these classic renditions. Move over Shatner and Nimoy! Record 3: She Loves You (Dr. Strangelove version). This video is a wild concoction of Cold War-era imagination (note the Ken Adam war-room set design).

More on 1960s UK Surrealism and satire here. Peter Sellers.org here. To learn more about Sellers, check out the excellent bio-pic, The Life & Death of Peter Sellers (2004), starring Geoffrey Rush.

BACHELOR PAD

BACHELOR PAD
From the typical musician's penthouse studio of early Hollywood films to the dream apartments of 1950s
Playboy magazine to Matt Helm's revolving bed (that tilts him into his pool!), we've seen some swinging pads in our day. Imagine a subterranean lair, like in Danger Diabolik, but with a Playboy Mansion slant. Lots of Ken Adam's curves and a Kubrick futuristic glow. Instead of the tilting bed, how about a tube that you can jump into- ala Thunderbirds- that slides you down into your pool below? You go it! Located in Bowdon, Cheshire UK, Country Life has it listed for a cool 2 million pounds. Check it out here.
