JAMES BOND BFI EVENTS

Event alert: The BFI in London has planned a big celebration of the James Bond film series between September 30-October 2! Fans will be treated to big-screen anniversary showings of Dr. No, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights, as well IMAX screenings of three of the Daniel Craig films. Also in the program are a number of special-interest presentations, including a conversation with the series producers and a look into Bond stunts and special effects. Another attraction will be the screening and Q&A around a new documentary about the history of Bond music, which really sounds interesting! From the press release: "Mat Whitecross’s new documentary, The Sound of 007 (Saturday 1 October), reveals the history behind the music of Bond, from the genesis of 1962’s Dr. No iconic theme, through to Billie Eilish’s Academy Award-winning song for 2021’s No Time To Die. Director Matt Whitecross will take part in a Q&A with lyricist Don Black, who wrote the theme songs for Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever, The Man with the Golden Gun, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough, and composer David Arnold, who wrote the scores for Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. " More info at BFI with program scheduling here. I hope some Spy Vibers in the London area are Abe to attend!

DIANA RIGG

Diana Rigg was born on on this day in 1938. Rigg spent her early years in India and returned to England at age eight. Training at RADA began in 1955. Her first big break on television was in a 1963 episode of Sentimental Agent by writer Brian Clemens. Broadcast two years prior to her debut as Mrs. Emma Peel on The Avengers, the young actress already displayed her trademark gravitas, sharp intelligence, and powerful independence. Cast as Steed's new partner, after Honor Blackman left the series to star in Goldfinger, Rigg and Macnee shared a unique chemistry on-screen that sparkled with warmth, humor, and panache. Their two seasons together were truly enchanting and must-see television For Spy Vibers. Following The Avengers, Rigg starred in numerous stage productions, films, and television shows, including her own series, Diana (1973-1974), and her famous role as a Bond Girl in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). Rigg even performed in some privately produced shorts that channeled her Peel persona. She appeared most recently in VictoriaGame of Thrones (winning an Emmy Award), Doctor Who, and she co-starred as her daughter Rachael Stirling's fictional mom on the fantastic series The Detectorists. "I don't want to retire," she said in recent years. "I never want to retire. What's the point of it?" Rigg made a rare appearance at the BFI in 2015 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her time on The Avengers. She also became a grandmother in 2017! She expressed an interest in returning to the Royal Shakespeare Company and a recent return to Broadway in a production of My Fair Lady earned her a Tony Award. She passed away at 82. Her daughter, actress Rachael Stirling, said she "died peacefully in her sleep early this morning, at home, surrounded by family... She spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession." Learn more: Rigg published a book, No Turn Unstoned, in 1983, and her biography was published in 2004 by Kathleen Tracy.
