SPY VIBE RADIO: LOLA

Greetings, Spy Vibers! My new segment on the Cocktail Nation radio show from Australia is up! Every month I spotlight a cool track from the corners of Mid-Century TV/Film history and provide some comments. As I'm still working on the late '50s section of my upcoming Spy Vibe book, it was natural to hop back into the jazz club scene of Peter Gunn and talk more about Lola Albright, who played Gunn's jazz singing girlfriend in the series. Lola's albums were sultry, but sweet, and fans of Julie London might dig her. And her character also provided a cool role model during an era when roles tended to be limited. She landed the part just as her first vocal album, Lola Wants You was coming out on Kem Records in 1957. The original liner notes exclaimed, “Every selection in Lola Wants You tells an intimate story -a story that happens, or you want to have happen, to you. This mature treatment is not ‘Girl wants boy,’ it is ‘woman wants man.’” Lola’s Edie wasn’t an action heroine, but she had her own gig as a singer, opened her own club in the final season, and could be seen pursuing her own interests. In one scene, for example, she was shown reading a heady (prop) tome called The Subjugation of the Human Personality and the Conflicts Therein. As the actress told TV Guide in 1959, she felt fortunate to land the role of “a real woman” after ten years in the industry. Check out my "Lola" episode on Cocktail Nation. Enjoy!
