FRITZ LANG SPIES

Start the month with promotional designs from one of Spy Vibe's all-time favorite films, Spies (1928) by Fritz Lang. Spies was co-written by Lang's then-wife, Thea von Harbou, whose credits also included Dr. Mabuse the Gambler, Die Niebelungen, Metropolis, Woman in the Moon, M, and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. Spies is distributed in the States by Kino Video and is currently streaming on Amazon.

RADAR 2010: SPY VIBE'S PICKS

Exploring the world of 1960s style-in-action is an ongoing adventure here at Spy Vibe. We have our eyes fixed to the radar screen, where we follow curiosity and make connections between the Arts and cultural history of the Cold War and beyond. It’s exciting when there are new releases to celebrate with our Spy Vibe community. Many essential books and movies have been released since late 2009. We saw the release of The Prisoner on Blu-ray, Seductive Espionage by Kevin Dart, and Free Agent by Jeremy Duns. Hermes Press began a great campaign to reprint classic adventure comics and Titan continues to print books about 007 films and comics. We also saw the recent release of Ian Fleming's Blofeld trilogy and volumes of Bond novels by Raymond Benson! And like any on-going process of research and celebration, it’s been an exciting time to discover old material that had not been on our radar before. It's a great period to be looking at stylish spies, mystery/adventure, modernist architects, and futuristic designers! Here are some treasures that caught our imagination at Spy Vibe in 2010:

FEMBOTS PREMIERE

FEMBOTS PREMIERE
Before the media world was infiltrated by sexy Fembots programmed for sabotage, assassination (and selling vodka), the first pop culture she-bot roamed the tunnels under Fritz Lang's Metropolis to bring political unrest to a boiling point. Kino International's Metropolis website has gone online, revealing first details of the theatrical re-release and Blu-ray edition of The Complete Metropolis, with 25 minutes of added footage. The film has its American premiere tonight at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Los Angeles, as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival, accompanied by the Alloy Orchestra. The event will be introduced by TCM Film Historian Robert Osborne. A full run of the film is scheduled at Laemmle's Royal theater starting May 14. It will also screen in New York at the Film Forum from May 7, and at the Cleveland Museum of Art on May 21-23. A trailer of the restored version is available at the Metropolis website or at the Apple trailer site. The Blu-ray edition is scheduled for November.
