SPY VIBE RADIO: HAWAIIAN EYE

Greetings, Spy Vibers! Every month I record a segment for Cocktail Nation radio out of Australia, where I briefly introduce a classic film or series and play some tracks from the soundtrack. In this month's episode I talk about a cool American TV series that bridged the late 1950s and early 1960s: Hawaiian Eye. The show was just one of a number of new programs based on exotic themes inspired by a trend for all things tropical and Polynesian. Other ripples in this wave included continued interest in the hit musical South Pacific, Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki book and Oscar-winning documentary, and Tiki themed bars and hotels. As commercial air travel arrived, Frank Sinatra was singing “Come Fly With Me,” and the likes of Les Baxter and Martin Denny were busy creating a string of Exotica albums that created an aural journey to distant locations on the map. Musician Arthur Lyman, fresh from the Martin Denny band, was even featured often in the series! Hawaiian Eye ran alongside shows like Surfside 6, Hong Kong, Adventures in Paradise, Bourbon Street Beat, 77 Sunset Strip, Sea Hunt, and Assignment: Underwater, expanding the scope of TV detective fiction with international locales and occasional forays into Cold War intrigue. Spy Vibers will also appreciate one of the main stars of Hawaiian Eye, pre-Wild Wild West Robert Conrad! SINATRA LAIR

Spy Vibers, I'm on a mission and look forward to sharing photographs with you from all the major filming locations from the great 1960s series like The Prisoner, The Avengers, The Saint, and many more. Stewart Williams, this Mid-Century Modern estate sports a swanky living room area with Sinatra's original home recording outfit by Valentino Electronics of Hollywood, a piano-shaped pool, and four luxury master and guest rooms for your agents and minions.
