CAMERA WEEK 2

Spy Vibe began Camera Week by looking at Photography as the prefect tool for mindful engagement. In my teaching I stress the importance of using the camera to make closer observations of the world (which I call "treasure hunting"), as well as to construct images in the studio. By moving through the process of exploration, reflection, and revision, we become tuned in to each moment and to our intellectual and emotional perceptions. I brought this up as a way to also celebrate the stellar creativity of the 1960s. In my last post, we looked at a large collection of images that showed the members of The Beatles engaged in the process of taking pictures. Today we continue that theme by looking at images of various artists from the era and their cameras. It's inspiring to see people who worked at a high level of music or film, for example, also spending their free time with Photography. As role models, the images remind us that we can engage in the creative process each day, and by doing so, we tap into a deep well that keeps giving. Below: Alain Delon, Sophia Loren, Bob Dylan, Klaus Voormann, Linda McCartney, James Dean, Muhammad Ali, Mia Farrow, Mick Jagger, Gina Lollobrigida, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Francoise Hardy, and Brigitte Bardot. BARDOT TREASURES

French siren Brigitte Bardot is the one of the latest icons to receive the treasury archive treatment. Joining John Lennon, David Bowie, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and The Who, the new book Brigitte Bardot: The Life, The Legend, The Movies serves as an illustrated biography featuring a large collection of facsimile artifacts and documents. Published by Carlton Books in October, the hardcover edition clocks in at 96 pages with treasury folders and envelopes. From Amazon: "When Brigitte Bardot appeared in Roger Vadim's And God Created Woman in 1957, her beauty set the world alight. But Bardot was more than just a sex symbol: she was a daring actress who worked with some of cinema's most-revered directors, including Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle. Film critic Ginette Vincendeau delves into Bardot's career and life, including her four marriages, her decision to "get out elegantly" and retire at a young age, and most notably, her unforgettable performances in Le Mépris, Les Femmes, and Les Pétroleuses. In addition to stunning photos of Bardot in her iconic roles, this visual biography includes 15 facsimiles of posters and other documents." More info here

FERAUD MOD FASHION

Fashion Sunday Supplement: Agent Katharine Boyd (Mod Tales) uncovered additional ads for designer Louis Feraud's (1921-1999) campaign with Shimbo Fabrics. Thanks K for getting these on our radar! Feraud established his own fashion house based in Cannes in 1950. By the middle of the decade, he was dressing stars like Brigitte Bardot! In these Shimbo Fabrics ads from the late 1960s, viewers got to feast on a marvelous, almost Op Art interplay between the Mod outfit and black and white background illustrations. Can't get enough of those white thigh boots? There were many Feraud/Shimbo ads between 1968 and 1970 (additional samples herehere, and here). According to the Fashion Model Directory, his work often expressed a sunny, embroidered vibe inspired by South American culture, but these creations were still firmly rooted in Mod motifs of geometric patterns and cut-outs. Enjoy!
