SPY VIBE RADIO: GET SMART

Spy Vibe's collaboration with the Cocktail Nation radio show from Australia continues with a new series- now live and streaming! Spy Vibe is featured in a podcast segment every month, where I introduce cool films/series and share recordings from the Cold War. This month I introduce Get Smart. Created by Buck Henry and the Prince of Parody- Mel Brooks, the series set out to break sit-com conventions by focusing on an inept secret agent. Made during the height of the Spy Boom, Get Smart push Bond elements to hilarious heights! In the music portion of the episode, I play a bit of the original score and a fantastic Ska interpretation of the theme. Tune in to listen hereFor more radio action, go to Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Episode #4 (Roger Moore/The Saint), and Episode #5 (The Avengers), Episode #6 (The Prisoner), and Episode #7 (The Ipcress File), Episode #8 (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), Spy Vibe Radio: UFO, Spy Vibe Radio: Danger DiabolikSpy Vibe Radio: Peter GunnSpy Vibe Radio: Jerry Cotton, and Spy Vibe Radio: FlintAnd tune in to Cocktail Nation -the number one lounge music radio show- every week for cool soundtracks, swingin' jazz, news and more. GET SMART POP

One of the treats of sifting through the archeology of 1960s pop culture is the constant discovery of little treasures. While gearing up to make some collages of spy tv ads and listings a while back, I came across this neat series of portraits of Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon of Get Smart) by Andy Warhol. Apologies to Get Smart collectors, who have probably had this on their radar for 50 years, but these are quite cool additions to my inner landscape of mod spy imagery from the period. These ran originally in the March 5th, 1966 edition of TV Guide. Stay tuned for more Get Smart as my next episode of the Cocktail Nation radio show goes live at the end of the month. Check last month's episode (Flint movies) for links to the show. Enjoy!

SPY GADGET EVENT

Upcoming Event: Hello, Chief? If you ever wanted to see the original screen-used props and costumes from 1960s spy shows and films, your chance is coming up soon as LA prepares for a special event and exhibit. Danny Biederman (The Incredible World of Spy-Fi) will be hosting an evening at the Hollywood Heritage Museum in October! This is a rare opportunity for Spy Vibers to see his amazing collection up close. From the press release: "On Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 at 7:30PM Hollywood Heritage and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will be kicking off the new season of the Evening @ the Barn series with a unique event on a special night! The Incredible World of Spy-Fi will feature a discussion on and a selection of Danny Biederman's world-famous original props from iconic spy movies and TV shows. Included in the display will be the famous shoe phone from Get Smart and the pen communicator from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Mr. Biederman will also be selling and signing copies of his book The Incredible World of SPY-FI. Following an intermission, the museum will present a screening of Mr. Biederman's "Hollywood Spytek", a documentary that contrasts the similarities between real spies and their fictional counterparts. The event will also feature a display of vintage spy toys from the 1960s! Don't miss this very rare opportunity to view Mr. Biedermans spy artifacts which have previously been displayed at the CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia and the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. There will also be a raffle consisting of related DVDs and books! Seating is limited. Doors open at 7:00PM. Free parking is available in the Hollywood Bowl Lot D." Tickets available here. Promo video below. If you haven't seen Danny's book yet, I highly recommend it. Just seeing pages devoted to Patrick Macnee's bowler and Diana Rigg's leather trousers from The Avengers is worth the price of admission! Below: images from Get Smart and a previous exhibit (posted by The Hitorialist). Hey, did you know Spy Vibe recently passed Two Million visitors? That was an exciting milestone! In other news, check out my episodes of the Cocktail Nation radio show, where I introduce classic spy films/TV series and play soundtracks and rare cuts: Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Episode #4 (Roger Moore/The Saint), and Episode #5 (The Avengers). Episode #6 (The Prisoner), and Episode #7 (The Ipcress File). Enjoy!
