SPACE FASHION: LESTOIL

Space-Age fashion looms large here on Spy Vibe. Maybe no other 1960s style can better symbolize that wonderful cocktail of fear and fascination with Cold War technology and the playful energy of the Youth Culture. The pinnacle of space-inspired creations by Courreges and Cardin was 1965-1966, but we can find a number of examples into 1968 that kept the aesthetic alive. In the film world we saw Barbarella, with futuristic Rabanne-style gladiator costumes, and 2001 A Space Odyssey, with its lunar stewardesses. Cardin and Gernreich continued to draw from futuristic pop art inspirations. And art directors in the advertising world mined the theme, as we can see in this campaign by Lestoil. See more in our post, Mods to Moongirls, and on Spy Vibe's Pinterest page.
