Bob Morane Week on Spy Vibe! Bob, you say? Not much flair to the name, but old Bob has been thrilling kids (especially in France and Germany) for decades. Morane was a character created by Belgian novelist Henri Vernes in 1953. Targeted for the juvenile fiction market, Morane appeared in over 200 novels and 80 comics that ranged from espionage and crime stories to adventure sagas featuring natives, spaceships, and dinosaurs- I think that about covers every market! Moran also appeared in a 1960 film, a 1965 television series, a computer game, and a 1998 animated series. His dossier reads like your average mass-market action hero. An ex-RAF pilot and expert in martial arts and weapons, Morane often teamed up with intelligence and law enforcement organizations around the world. His missions pitted him against a few reoccurring diabolical masterminds based on the Fu Manchu model- including a female baddie named Miss Ylang-Ylang, head of S.M.O.G.! Spy Vibers might find it interesting that her henchman, Roman Orgonetz, was an assassin outfitted with solid gold teeth. A proto-Jaws? I recently had fun looking over a large collection of book designs and thought I would share a few of my favorites. If you are looking for vintage Morane books, there appear to be hundreds of them listed for sale on eBay from Quebec. Stay tuned for more Bob Morane- including a classic Spy Vibe design doppleganger! Thanks to my sister site Una Plaga de Espias for posting the Operation Atlantida book cover (not to be confused with the 1965 003 George Steele movie Operation Atlantida) and getting Bob Morane on my radar. Spy Vibe's Bob Morane series: Intro, Comics, Toys, Pilote Magazine, Records, Screen. Enjoy!
