BOWIE'S HI-FI
David Bowie's art collection is going up for auction at Sotheby's soon and there have been some preview exhibits in London and NYC. The collection is described in no less than THREE volumes of catalogs! From his days as a 1960s Mod to Ziggy, Berlin, and beyond, it's no surprise that such an innovative, multimedia artist would also be passionate about having great art in his environment. Bowie's collection includes works by masters such as Duchamp, Basquiat, Hirst, Auerbach, Henry Moore, African art, Surrealist and Outsider art- and this groovy Hi-Fi from 1965! Remember, this was the year of The 10th Victim, starring Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress. And like the film, this piece illustrates the era's fascination with design based on a monochromatic, geometric, and futurist aesthetic. Details according to the Sotheby's preview: "Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni, Brionvega Radiophonograph, model no. RR 126, 1965. Estimate £800–1,200. It perhaps comes as no surprise to discover that the most innovative and daring musician of his generation listened to music on such an unconventional record player. Created by brothers Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni for Brionvega, this playful stereo cabinet is a definitive piece of 1960s Italian design, with examples in the permanent collections of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York and the V&A in London." What do you think, Spy Vibers? Wouldn't this go great in a Spy Vibe lair? I don't know about you, but I'd like to set this up and play through Kraftwerk, Eno, and move into Low, Heroes, and Lodger.
