HAPPY NEW YEAR

As the Cold War seemed to slip even further back into our lives in 2017, I thought it would be interesting to share these Soviets-in-Space cards. Happy New Year! с Новым годом to you secret agents and astronauts! Celebrate the new year with Spy Vibe and Soviet-era New Year card illustrations. May all of us ride the rocket of progress and efficiency in 2018. The first image is from David Portree's collection and commemorates Voskhod ("sunrise"), the first multi-person mission launched in 1964. You can read about the history behind the image at Wired here, and about the first Soviet spacewalk from Voskhod in 1965 here. There is a nice collection of cards and posters at Retronaut here. In other news, check out my episodes of Cocktail Nation radio as I introduce some of the great spy classics and soundtracks: Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Episode #4 (Roger Moore/The Saint), and Episode #5 (The Avengers)Episode #6 (The Prisoner), and Episode #7 (The Ipcress File), Episode #8 (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.). Enjoy!

BATMAN 66 EXHIBIT

The Hollywood Museum has announced an exciting new exhibition devoted to the Batman (1966) television series! From the press release: "The exhibit, which will consist of four popular sections (Wayne Manor, The Batcave, Gallery of Guest Super Villains, and The Collectibles of Batman ‘66), will pay tribute to the memory of Adam West and honor the other half of the Dynamic Duo, Burt Ward, and the iconic show, still seen today in the U.S. and around the world weekly. The Batman 66 exhibit will feature original costumes and props from the show, which have not been seen since it originally broadcast from 1966-68. Dadigan says, “We have costumes and props that evoke one’s childhood memories of the ever popular TV series, “Batman”. There is something for everyone – from the Batmobile and Batcycle to Burt and Adam’s original costumes worn during the show’s 120 episode run on ABC TV Network, as well as guest villains – and one of my favorites – the original Dr. Casandra costume worn by TV and film star Ida Lupino, that has never been seen publicly before.” Batman '66 Exhibit runs between January 12th and March 17th. Nothing has been added yet to their website, so check the museum's events calendar on Facebook for details. Atomic batteries to power, turbines to speed! DIABOLIK EVENT

Spy Vibers in the LA area: Stop by Quentin Tarantino's Beverly Cinema tomorrow, Saturday December 30th, to catch Mario Bava's Danger Diabolik on the Big Screen! Not only is this a rare chance to see the 1968 classic, but they will be screening an original 35mm print from Tarantino's own collection! Get "Deep Deep Down"!" Film starts at 11:59PM. From the press release: "The psychedelic, swinging ‘60s super-crime caper Danger: Diabolik is a colorful jolt of James-Bond-meets-Batman high camp adventure from legendary director Mario Bava, composer Ennio Morricone and Barbarella producer Dino De Laurentiis! Based on the popular Italian comics, Diabolik (John Phillip Law) is a suave master criminal out for all he can take, seduce or get away with. With his lovely partner (Marisa Mell) on his arm, he’ll have to stay one step ahead of the police with an arsenal of clever gadgets, especially when a jealous underworld kingpin (Thunderball’s Adolfo Celi) teams with the law (Michel Piccoli, Terry-Thomas) to help catch him." More info here. Find out why Danger Diabolik was #1 in Spy Vibe's list of top-ten set designs here. I highly recommend events at the Beverly. One of my favorite outings was to go to LA to see the new Man From U.N.C.L.E. film with fellow writers and collectors, and the evening finished up at the Beverly for a TRIPLE FEATURE of U.N.C.L.E. 1960s movies. And per the theater's mission, only original film prints were screened. I like their style! Enjoy!
