SPY VIBE RADIO: PETER GUNN

Spy Vibe's collaboration with the Cocktail Nation radio show from Australia continues with a new series- now live and streaming! Spy Vibe is featured in a podcast segment every month, where I introduce cool films/series and share recordings from the Cold War. This month I introduce Peter Gunn, a jazz-infused, private-eye classic created by Blake Edwards and scored by Henry Mancini. Before they made the Pink Panther series, this dream team brought sophistication to the hard-boiled genre at the dawn of the space age. Tune in to listen here- and I'll reveal some interesting trivia about a famous composer who played on the original theme recording. For more radio action, go to Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Episode #4 (Roger Moore/The Saint), and Episode #5 (The Avengers), Episode #6 (The Prisoner), and Episode #7 (The Ipcress File), Episode #8 (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), Spy Vibe Radio: UFO, and Spy Vibe Radio: Danger DiabolikAnd tune in to Cocktail Nation -the number one lounge music radio show- every week for cool soundtracks, swingin' jazz, news and more. Enjoy!

AGENT ZERO M

Spy Kids: If you look through old toy catalogs from the 1960s you can see an interesting transition, when kids started to move away from western-themed heroes and began to embrace the Spy Boom in their fantasy games. And amidst the Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Bond toys came this nifty range, Agent Zero M, featuring cool spy gadgets such as transforming cameras and radios. Secret agent suit not included. Check out one of the TV commercials featuring a young Kurt Russell below. Enjoy!

NEW PRISONER COMIC

New release: Timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the US television debut of The Prisoner, Titan Comics will release issue #1 in their Prisoner comic series on April 25th. The new comic by Peter Milligan (X-Statix, Batman) and Colin Lorimar (Harvest) is a sequel to the original Patrick McGoohan TV series and focusses on a contemporary spy trapped in The Village. Cover artists include Mike Allred (I love his retro/cartoon style- very fun!) and Jack Kirby (see Titan's upcoming Prisoner book by Jack Kirby and Gil Kane). Looking at the trailer below, I can't help but wonder if the comics will be taking too much of a contemporary-action approach. Much of the original's appeal for me was watching Number 6 -calculating and masking his sometimes feral instincts for independence- and the sinister Village wrapped in surreal pleasantries. There was so much going on in each scene of McGoohan's Prisoner, it was like watching a mad, psychological chess game set in a Mod Wonderland. Speaking as a comic art fan (and published artist/writer), I think it would be a great challenge to capture those nuances in comic form. So many attempts to bring 1960s spies to the comic page have often seemed oddly static. I also spotted a typo in one of the few sample pages released to the press- hopefully they corrected that before going to print. As usual, I remain cautiously optimistic and hope the new series will be fantastic! Check it out at your local comic shop this week. And thank you to Titan for supporting The PrisonerRelated posts: Prisoner Jack Kirby Gil KaneInterview: The Prisoner GuidePortmeirion Photography 1Portmeirion PhotographyThe Prisoner London FlatInterview: Police SurgeonReview: The Prisoner: Audio Vol 2Alan Hayes Prisoner Audio ReviewInterview: Ian OlgivyInterview: Brian GormanPrisoner SupergrassPrisoner XTCPrisoner XTC 2Prisoner DC FontanaInterview: Avengers Two Against the UnderworldUmbrella Man: Patrick MacneeAvengers Interview: Mike RichardsonThe Saint Interview: Ian DickersonAvengers Interview: Rodney MarshallAvengers Interview Rodney Marshall 2John Buss InterviewJaz Wiseman InterviewVillage Triangle
