JOSEPH MAGNIN

Joseph Magnin was a high-end department store in San Francisco, known for its sophisticated ads and famous cliental (including Marilyn Monroe and Ladybird Johnson). Apparently the shop also had a men-only section with a clublike atmosphere called the "Wolves Den", where guys could shop, drink cocktails, ogle sales ladies, and smoke cigars (that part sounds old fashion, doesn't it?). During its final years under original family management in the late 1960s, the advertisements reflected the clean graphics, geometric fashion designs, and focus on youth culture during the era. Many of the advertisements also highlighted the work of illustrator Betty Brader. Here are a few examples below. More info at The Department Store Museum.
