ALMA COGAN

English singer Alma Cogan (1932-1966) started her career as a teenager singing at dances and performing on stage. By twenty she had released her first single for HMV and was a regular on BBC's Take it From Here. Known as the the "Girl with the Giggle," her laugh was included in one of her records, she became a media star in the 1950s. But by the 1960s her style started to seem out of date with the changing culture. Cynthia Lennon apparently spoke about how Cogan was the butt of John's critical humor, yet he was completely taken with her when they finally met and they had a long affair. Cogan sadly passed away at the age of 34, but she recorded some tunes at the end of her life in an attempt to appeal to new trends. Her final album included Beatles tracks. She also released this little novelty record, Love Ya Illya (Pye 7N 17108), in her final year under the name Angela & the fans. The song is reminiscent of the wave of "fan" songs at the time such as I'll Let You Hold My Hand and We Love the Beatles. Below: Alma Cogan (Portrait Gallery), with Paul and John, and Love Ya Illya video. Enjoy!
