BOND KINDLE SALE

[ENDED] Deal alert: Amazon is running a special on Kindle editions of Ian Fleming's original James Bond novels. As a prime member, I'm seeing the ebooks listed at $1.99 (marked down from $7.99). I believe this is a part of their Year-End Deals, and not exclusive to prime members. The sale also includes Solo by William Boyd. Raymond Benson's The Facts of Death is currently listed at 0.99.  If you have a Kindle, this is a great time to fill it up with 007! Ian Fleming at Amazon link here. Enjoy!

DESIGNING BOND BOOKS

Artistic License Renewed, an art and literary James Bond blog, and I share a great interest in book design, rare editions, and in the people behind classic spy novels. The blog featured an interesting short interview yesterday with Suzanne Dean, Creative Director for Random House. Dean led a team of designers to create the covers for the recent Vintage Classics editions of Ian Fleming. She also worked on designing the hardcover edition of William' Boyd's 007 continuation novel, Solo. Read about her process and about how the team channeled a period-style vibe by going back to Saul Bass for inspiration. Interview here.

007 SOLO DESIGNS

Book covers are forever. They set the tone for our reading experience, and often endure in the mind as visual symbols of our favorite stories. Ian Fleming Publications announced today the new jacket designs for the paperback editions of the new James Bond novel, Solo. The UK version will be released on May 8th and combines the hardcover typeface with a photographic image that aligns the release with last year's 007 Contemporary Vintage Series. Fleming Publications suggests the single eye motif is reminiscent of the original For Your Eyes Only design by Chopping. To my two eyes, the design seems oddly top-heavy with too many circles stacked off-center to the iris. Perhaps it captures a contemporary look, but I wonder if it will date quickly? Those 1980s silhouette covers looked similarly slick and modern at the time, but have not aged well. The US and Canadian editions will arrive on June 3rd. Based on the hardcover design, the paperback gets an icy blue makeover. I prefer this to the UK cover, but I'm not sure it evokes "James Bond" to me. Perhaps a contemporary well-pressed Bond- or maybe a cigarette-package design? I admit that I prefer my 007 to have a vintage flair, and the covers by Chopping, Hawkey, and the geometric patterns by Amazon all set the mood for timeless adventure. Solo is set at the end of the 1960s and I wonder if the jacket captures that flavor? The original hardcover was more elegant, with negative space in the upper half and the typeface seeping out from a collective black stripe on pale yellow (comparison below). It will be fun to look back on these covers in ten years and see how they stand up. In the meantime, enjoy Solo and congratulations to Fleming Publications on the new James Bond adventure! Below: UK paperback, US/Canada paperback, US hardcover.

WILLIAM BOYD TALKS BOND

Author William Boyd reads from his new James Bond novel, Solo, and discusses "the troubled soul of Ian Fleming's James Bond and the pleasures and perils of taking on the 007 franchise." Listen and download the interview at The Guardian here. Thanks to the fantastic Book Bond site for putting this on the radar.

SOLO 007 REVIEW

One of my favorite sites, The Book Bond, has posted a review of the new 007 novel Solo by William Boyd. "Solo is the right name for this book. Not because "OO7 goes solo" -- a nifty marketing slogan. It's because author William Boyd goes solo into the juggernaut that is "James Bond OO7" and fearlessly does his own thing. Not since the very first continuation novel, Colonel Sun, has their been a Bond book less concerned with the industry that is James Bond. Boyd simply tells a riveting story of espionage, geopolitics, and a British secret agent in 1969. But the ghost of Ian Fleming is right there by his side." Read more at The Book Bond here.

JAMES BOND INTERVIEW

Author William Boyd published an "interview" with James Bond in The Guardian yesterday. 007 fans will enjoy Boyd's tone and the many references from Fleming's original novels. This brief scene is a good example of how Boyd weaves in Bond's personality and background: "The vongole arrived and a half-litre carafe of valpolicella that Bond had ordered. Carmencita tried to sprinkle my vongole with grated parmesan but Bond wouldn't let her. "Not on a vongole," Bond explained. "And that parmesan was probably grated two weeks ago. You might as well shake sawdust on your food. It's got to come straight from the block." "What you eat and drink is very important to you," I observed. "Any fool can eat badly," Bond said. "We have to eat to live. You might as well take some trouble over what goes down your throat." The vongole was excellent – as was the valpolicella, young and fruity. I had one glass – Bond coped with the rest. "If you eat and drink well," Bond went on, warming to his theme, "then, for a moment, you have the illusion that life is good and the world is on its proper course. And we're all entitled to an illusion from time to time." It made a kind of sense, I thought, not bad for a diurnal philosophy." Read the whole interview here.

William Boyd's new James Bond novel Solo is out now in the UK. It will be released in the US on October 8th. The author below at the Solo book launch, complete with vintage Jensen, lovely flight attendant, and a clear briefcase containing a rare signed first edition destined for one of seven points around the globe.
