UPDATES & SAUL BASS

Greetings, Spy Vibers! I hope everyone is staying safe and doing well. I finally wrapped up another school year recently and then taught a really fun summer comic art class for kids. Now grateful to have time to devote to working on my Spy Vibe book project. I've recently solved some questions I've had for a while about how to best organize the material, so unless I find more ways to complicate it (curiosity, you know), I think I'm in good shape to bang away at it for the next month. Some minor news re: my recent post about the Fleetway Secret Agent series: The Book Palace wrote back to say they are gathering up the issues as a first step to research the stories and artists, and then they will determine if they wish to do any collected editions. More news as it arrives. I recently "attended" a premiere on-line of a new doc about Pierre Cardin, which was really excellent: House of Cardin. Hopefully Spy Vibers will get to see it! The other bit that crossed my radar this week was a new blog post from the California Film Institute, who have done up a nice tribute to the great graphic designer and filmmaker, Saul Bass (1920-1996). In addition to a poster gallery (lots of Hitchcock and Kubrick), they've also assembled a fantastic collection of video clips celebrating his many movie title sequences, such as Vertigo and North By Northwest. DESIGNING BOND BOOKS

Artistic License Renewed, an art and literary James Bond blog, and I share a great interest in book design, rare editions, and in the people behind classic spy novels. The blog featured an interesting short interview yesterday with Suzanne Dean, Creative Director for Random House. Dean led a team of designers to create the covers for the recent Vintage Classics editions of Ian Fleming. She also worked on designing the hardcover edition of William' Boyd's 007 continuation novel, Solo. Read about her process and about how the team channeled a period-style vibe by going back to Saul Bass for inspiration. Interview here.

French artist Alain Bossuyt has designed a beautiful collection of Bond-themed tribute posters. The images are based on essential elements from each film and use clean bold shapes and colors with a nod toward Saul Bass. Spy Vibers can order prints from Society 6 here.
