SPY VIBE RADIO: FLINT

Spy Vibe's collaboration with the Cocktail Nation radio show from Australia continues with a new series- now live and streaming! Spy Vibe is featured in a podcast segment every month, where I introduce cool films/series and share recordings from the Cold War. This month I introduce the Flint movies starring James Coburn. Although they pulled out all the stops to exaggerate James Bond conventions, Our man Flint (1966) and In Like Flint (1967) actually surpassed their satirical intent with a heaping dose of COOL! Find out why I ranked the films #3 in my top-10 set design countdown here (main article with guest lists here). Jerry Goldsmith based both soundtracks on variations of the main theme and managed to infuse each track with inventive nuances and instrumentation that captured the vibe of the era. In this episode I play one of the variations from the first film. Tune in to listen here. For more radio action, go to Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Episode #4 (Roger Moore/The Saint), and Episode #5 (The Avengers), Episode #6 (The Prisoner), and Episode #7 (The Ipcress File), Episode #8 (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), Spy Vibe Radio: UFO, Spy Vibe Radio: Danger Diabolik, Spy Vibe Radio: Peter Gunn, and Spy Vibe Radio: Jerry Cotton. And tune in to Cocktail Nation -the number one lounge music radio show- every week for cool soundtracks, swingin' jazz, news and more. Enjoy! related post: Mad For Mondrian.

MAN FROM ASTROMAN

The band Man Or Astroman? started in the early 1990s with a fun cocktail of blistering surf-punk guitar and frequent nods to classic sci-fi and cult faves. Fans of MST3K might remember the band's cover of the main theme, not to mention that many of the group's recordings begin with sound samples from cheesy MST flicks. Here's their cover of the Man From U.N.C.L.E. theme from their 1995 album, Project Infinity. FLINT SCORES!

If the classic Flint movies starring James Coburn are your spy vibe, have I got news for you! Screen Archives Entertainment has announced a new release from Intrada that compiles the original Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack albums for Our Man Flint and In Like Flint. From SAE: "Finally! Two great sixties albums by Jerry Goldsmith make their debut on CD, mastered from the recently discovered original 20th Century-Fox stereo album session masters! Preserved in pristine condition in the vast UMG vaults, Our Man Flint and In Like Flint were short but exciting LPs that came out in 1966 & 1967 respectively. Both movies featured James Coburn as secret agent Derek Flint. Daniel Mann directs the former, Gordon Douglas directs the latter. Not to be confused with the Varese Sarabande release of soundtrack highlights, this Intrada CD offers both classic original albums exactly as Goldsmith recorded them, in crisp stereo with vivid orchestral color. Cool action, tuneful adventure and one of the composer's most famous themes all have their say. Included are authentic reproductions of both Bob Peak album jackets, classics in their own right, presented in our flipper-style CD cover. Choose your own favorite! These two albums have been amongst the most requested for CD release in our label's history. Wait no more, they're yours to spin! Jerry Goldsmith conducts both scores. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remain! -INTRADA" Limited collector's edition $19.99. Amazon page here. Complete track info below. Looking for the limited-edition Blu-ray editions of Flint? I hear quantities are running low: Our Man Flint, In Like Flint.
