2 TONE DOC

Happy weekend, Spy Vibers! I'm typing away here in the pad on my upcoming book and taking breaks from the smoky conditions here with some light, iconoclastic Monkees episodes. If you haven't checked out my new episode of Cocktail Nation radio, this month's segment is about Radiophonic Workshop composer John Baker. Also on the music front, I've really enjoyed exploring the many Ska and Calypso tunes from the 1960s based on spy movies and television shows here on Spy Vibe. I even thought about curating a compilation at one point, but tracking down all the rights holders seemed a bit daunting on top of my other projects and busy teaching schedule. Hopefully some Spy Vibers were able to pick up the recent box set of 7" James Bond-related singles from the 1960s released by Soul Jazz for Record Store Day. When I get time to crack my copy open I'll share some pics and a review. If you are interested in exploring the world of Ska from the 1970s and 1980s, there's a great episode of Under the Influence available on Youtube that I recommend highly. In the program we get to hear from members of 2 Tone bands, such as The Specials, The "English" Beat (filmed before Ranking Roger passed away), and The Selecter, about how multi-cultural communities in the UK responded to really dire conditions by producing danceable music that reflected the struggles and passions of working class people. We also get to visit the studio of John Sims, who designed the great 2 Tone Records logo and sleeves! The doc then goes even further to trace the legacy of Ska, as musicians created their own sub-culture pockets of rhythm and style in places like the US, Mexico, Norway, Chile, and China. Great tunes, and even more impactful, such a great celebration of communities making music together. 34 minutes. I'll put the doc below and hopefully it'll stay up on Youtube for a while. Enjoy!
