New release: Codename Rattlesnake by Count Arthur Strong. One of the many highlights from my summer with friends in the UK last year was being introduced to the hilarious world of Count Arthur Strong. Strong is the invention of comedian and character actor Steve Delaney, who first created his alter-ego in the 1980s. One really has to hear or see Delaney in action to get it (much like an Inspector Clouseau), but Count Arthur has been described as an elderly, pompous, deluded thespian with a talent for malapropisms. Delaney brought Count Arthur back in the late 1990s for the Edinburgh festival and his character eventually became a cult figure through a series of radio shows, television series, live tours, and books. One of my fave bits from my summer tutelage was Count Arthur's audition to play James Bond (radio series 1- you can listen to samples streaming on Amazon; the Bond part is toward the end of track #4). Spy Vibers might enjoy checking out a recent publication by Delaney called Codename Rattlesnake, now available in print and audio editions. I recommend the latter so you can hear Count Arthur himself- nobody does it better! From the press release: "Count Arthur Strong reads out loud his first spy novella! Sad news today that I wish was spam spam spam: talented writer, director, actor, historian, author, and Monty Python member Terry Jones has passed away. Terry J started his career in the Oxford Review, where he met collaborator and future Python co-founder, Michael Palin. Spy Vibers will remember Terry's work in Python's hilarious TV series and in the feature films, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Life of Brian (which Terry directed), but his curiosity and output was even more prolific. Here are just a few notable faves Terry had a hand in making: Do Not Adjust Your Set (co-writer, performer), The Complete and Utter History of Britain (co-writer, performer), Ripping Yarns (co-writer, performer), Douglas Adams' Starship Titanic (co-author), and Labyrinth (screenplay). He also created countless children's books, scholarly non-fiction, documentaries, columns, and poetry. He was diagnosed with dementia in 2015 and spent his final years unable to speak. I was sad to hear about his decline, but found some solace in hearing that Terry was able to meet his friend and collaborator, Michael Palin, for their regular walks on Hamstead Heath. Terry passed away January 21st at the age of 77. Some words for Terry follow. Stephen Fry: "Farewell, Terry Jones. The great foot has come down to stamp on you. My god what pleasure you gave, what untrammeled joy and delight. What a wonderful talent, heart and mind." Michael Palin: "Terry was one of my closest, most valued friends. He was kind, generous, supportive and passionate about living life to the full. He was far more than one of the funniest writer performers of his generation, he was the complete Renaissance comedian - writer, director, presenter, historian, brilliant children's author, and the warmest, most wonderful company you could wish to have. I feel very fortunate to have shared so much of my life with him and my heart goes out to Anna, Alison and all his family." Eric Idle: "I loved him the moment I saw him on stage at the Edinburgh Festival in 1963. So many laughs, moments of total hilarity onstage and off we have all shared with him. It’s too sad if you knew him, but if you didn’t you will always smile at the many wonderfully funny moments he gave us." John Cleese: "It feels strange that a man of so many talents and such endless enthusiasm, should have faded so gently away... Of his many achievements, for me the greatest gift he gave us all was his direction of 'Life of Brian'. Perfection. Two down, four to go." Terry Gilliam: "HE WAS A VERY NAUGHTY BOY!!... and we miss you. Terry was someone totally consumed with life.. a brilliant, constantly questioning, iconoclastic, righteously argumentative and angry but outrageously funny and generous and kind human being and very often a complete pain in the ass. One could never hope for a better friend." Sadly, we also lost his collaborator in Python and Do Not Adjust Your Set, Neil Innes, less than a month ago. There are times I wish we could stop the clocks, but thankfully the laughs never end.

Monty Python's Flying Circus made its TV debut 50 years ago on this day in 1969! The combination of these six talented writers/performers combusted in a cocktail of Goon-like silliness, satirical wit, astounding surrealist flights of imagination, and Beatle-like magic that was sheer genius. It's been all dead parrots, killer rabbits, silly walks, Spanish Inquisitions, and wink wink nudge nudge ever since. Like many kids in the US, my introduction to the group was a two-pronged invasion of hilarious comedy records and late night PBS. One of my fondest memories of childhood was watching my best friend Alec's dad, Strome Lamon (Director of corporate advertising at Simon and Schuster) sitting in his chair watching the family TV with tears streaming down his face in fits of ecstatic laughter. He really opened up the world of British comedy to me (thank you, Strome). It was great to have that kind of support from adults to learn about humor and to cultivate my curiosity. I had a copy of Python's Live at the Civic Center album and I'm pretty sure I forced to Alec memorize all the skits with me one summer so we could perform it verbatim (in accents) to his parents (thank you, Alec). My mom was also a supportive audience as I continued to pursue this newfound love of recitation. Little did I know Alec and I were joining a growing population (cult?) of kids who obsess over the Pythons and trade lines of dialog in darkened hallways like secret handshakes. I think knowledge of their brilliant skits and movie scenes became a kind of cultural currency. And I'm happy to report that even my current 9th graders say they know kids who still do that. There is hope! During my summer in the UK this year I was super lucky to see Michael Palin give a talk about his new book and an overview of his career (loved it!)- and amazingly caught up with him again at the National Archives for a talk about his travels during the end of the Soviet Union. I'm happy to say I've also been lucky to see John Cleese and Eric Idle a number of times in person and every experience has brought me right back to that fundamental love for the incredible intelligence, sense of humor, off the charts imagination, and deep humanity of this group of guys. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Monty Python, Spy Vibers can look forward to many new releases and cool events. The BFI have released two restored (and more complete) DVD sets of the great pre-Python series, At Last the 1948 Show and Do Not Adjust Your Set, and UK distributer Network have put together a gigantic restored Blu-ray set of the original Flying Circus series -with tons of extras, including text by my friend Andrew Pixley. The Monty Python Sings album was released this week as a 2LP set. Folks who loved the Holy Grail and Life of Brian films can catch special screenings in theaters (check local listings). Spy Vibers in London should also check Python events happening at the BFI this fall (check at BFI). Carol Cleveland has done some Q&A events and just did a long radio interview about Python (check her news page for details). John Cleese is currently on tour (check his Facebook page for dates). Subscribers of Netflix can see just about everything via their streaming platform. And the Radio Times has just published a Python at 50 special edition. And there is even more because four of the Pythons just refuse to retire and keep spoiling us with new projects (bless them).
