LINDA THORSON

Happy Birthday to Linda Thorson. Born in Canada on June 18th, 1947, Thorson graduated from RADA and joined The Avengers as Tara King in 1968. With tough (and kinky!) boots to fill following Diana Rigg's departure, the young actress enjoyed a successful year with Patrick Macnee performing in many of the show's most eccentric stories. Her approach to Tara King brought a sense of sweetness and fun to The Avengers. Thorson went on to Broadway and stage work with the RSC and Old Vic, and she made many appearances on TV shows, including Return of the Saint, The Equalizer, Star Trek TNG, Marblehead Manor, Emily of New Moon, The Hoop Life, and Emmerdale. Like many of her contemporaries, she also made some records- stay tuned for my Vinyl Avengers post. Thorson most recently appeared on Rookie Blue, Sylvia Plath: Girl Detective, and produced the play, The Goodbye Bird, for Colleen Murphy (Terminal Station, The December Man). Many Happy Returns, Linda!

PAUL AT 72

Paul McCartney's friend and collaborator, Barry Miles, summed up their early years by saying, "I think of the 60s as a supermarket of ideas. We were looking for new ways to live." If Swinging London in the 1960s represented a hurricane of cultural revolution, McCartney was in the eye of the storm. On his 72nd birthday, Spy Vibe looks back at the art of Paul McCartney. Photo below in true space-age fashion by Richard Avedon.

Paul McCartney was born seventy-two years ago today. His mother Mary (as in "mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom") was a nurse. His father, James, was an amateur musician. He had his own "Jim Mac's Jazz Band" back in the hot jazz days, and he brought Paul and younger brother Mike up with an appreciation for all kinds of music. The family listened closely to old 78 records and the radio, and McCartney developed a keen ear and passion to make music of his own. After a brief interlude with a trumpet that his dad gave him, he was inspired by the skiffle craze to pick up the guitar. He swapped his horn for a Framus Zenith acoustic model. It wasn't until he saw an image of Slim Whitman that he realized he could restring the instrument backwards for easier playing as a lefty. As Lonnie Donegan belted out Rock Island Line and other skiffle hits, McCartney wrote his first tunes, including When I'm Sixty-Four. In 1956, he found his "messiah" Elvis Presley. Elvis opened the floodgates of Rock and McCartney became fascinated by Fats Domino, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and the Everly Brothers. Photo below: playing guitar in the back yard by brother Mike McCartney (The Scaffold).

McCartney's childhood friend, Ivan Vaughan (also born on June 18th), brought him to the Woolton County Fete on July 6, 1957, where he formally met John Lennon for the first time. The two of them shared a love for Rock n Roll, especially two rockabilly cats that would tour England quite a bit in those early years, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent (Vincent seen below with Paul and John in matching leather gear). As the story goes of that first meeting, McCartney impressed Lennon with Cochran's Twenty-Flight Rock and Lennon played Vincent's Be-Bop-A-Lula for the first time on stage. McCartney soon joined Lennon's band and history followed with Hamburg, The Cavern, world tours, Sgt. Pepper'sAbbey Road, and beyond.

Although the movie A Hard Days Night created an on-screen persona of McCartney as the cute, crooning Beatle, history shows that McCartney and Lennon belted out rockers and ballads equally. McCartney's musical background did broaden his pallet to include jazz and showtune-style songs, which Lennon called Paul's "granny music". And although Lennon embraced avant-garde projects in the later 1960s, it is not as well-known that McCartney was a cultural trailblazer for the group in the mid-1960s. While his bandmates moved out to the suburbs, McCartney stayed in Swinging London to feed his appetite for new avenues of creativity. See below for more on experimental projects. Here is a sample of one of my favorite McCartney pop tracks from the London days, Paperback Writer, which is fueled by his infectious Epiphone guitar groove.

While juggling the busy Beatles schedule, McCartney was a man about town, soaking up inspiration from all corners of the arts. He helped Barry Miles start the underground London paper, International Times, and they attended happenings at the Roundhouse with performances by Beat Poets and The Pink Floyd. McCartney began to attend film screenings and to make his own experimental films (his footage was later stolen). He also became fascinated with John Cage and the creation of tape loops and sound collages, which he called "electronic symphonies." He facilitated Lennon's contribution of his hand-written lyrics to The Word, Yoko Ono's book of graphic scores for John Cage. And McCartney helped to renovate and set up the Indica Gallery (Miles and McCartney shown below at Indica), where Lennon later met Yoko Ono. Moving with the in-crowd in Swinging London, it would prove to be one of the most creatively fertile periods for both McCartney and The Beatles.
McCartney's passion for experimentation fed back into a number of Beatles projects, including the seagull-sounding tape loops on Tomorrow Never Knows, The Sgt. Pepper's concept album, the formation of an Apple subsidiary label devoted to poetry (including William S Burroughs) and experimental music, and the Magical Mystery Tour film. McCartney later teamed with Sgt. Pepper's cover artist Peter Blake, Super Furry Animals, and others on an interesting album called Liverpool Sound Collage (2000). Here's is the track Temporary Secretary from McCartney II (1980). With its manic vocals and early use of synthesizer, Rolling Stone has called it a "cult classic."

Paul McCartney has continued to explore mainstream and experimental projects each year since The Beatles disbanded in 1970. In the last twenty years, he has released many classical music compositions, new electronic experiments, an anthology of poetry (including a memorial to childhood pal, Ivan), and he exhibited a large body of work as a painter. How does he manage it? If lifestyle is any clue to his output: jogging, family, laughter, music, and being meat-free seem to be the top of the list. Spy Vibers will, of course, celebrate McCartney's addition to the world of James Bond with his theme to Live and Let Die. Others may also applaud him for his Swinging London style. It all comes back, however, to his deepest roots- music. That kid playing guitar in the photo above is still driven by a love of performing. Spy Vibers can see for themselves during his on-going tours. He is slated to play the last Candlestick show before the stadium is dismantled (The Beatles played their final gig there in 1966). Happy Birthday, Paul. Many Happy Returns from Jason at Spy Vibe.

FRANCIS MATTHEWS CASEY KASEM

Fans on both sides of the pond mourned the passing of two prominent voice actors last weekend. Francis Matthews (1927-2014), the voice of Captain Scarlet, passed away on June 14th. He was a familiar face to British fans, appearing in many classics over the years, including The Avengers, Interpol Calling, International Detective, Dracula Prince of Darkness, Rasputin the Mad Monk, The Saint, Crossplot, and Paul Temple. Matthews was best remembered for bringing Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's Captain Scarlet to life. Until Scarlet, the Anderson shows had typically used Americanized accents to help sell to overseas markets. Apparently Matthews impressed the producers with his Cary Grant impression, and was cast in 1966. The Cary Grant sound of his voice not only brought a classic air to the series, it opened the doors for a British vibe in the Anderson shows that followed. Hearing that he died over the weekend, many of our agents from England said they had lost the voice of their childhood. Images below from The Avengers and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. Ironically, another prominent voice actor passed away the next day on June 15th. Many American fans mourned the loss of Casey Kasem (1932-2014). Kasem voiced Robin and other characters in the Batman cartoon universe on and off between 1968 and 1985. He also defined the iconic role of Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo cartoons from 1969 to 2009. He lent his talents to many other programs, including Hawaii Five-O, Ironside, Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew, Charlie's Angels, Battle of the Planets, and The Transformers. Kasem was best known to music fans as the founder and radio host of the American Top 40

BEATLES MONO LPS

There is a great flurry of excitement this morning with the announcement that The Beatles will release their original mono records in September on vinyl. The project has been many years in the making and fans are overjoyed to hear the LPs will be cut directly from the master tapes with no digital equipment. For the audiophiles, this means a return to the lush full range of analog- something we have been pleading Apple for for years. The group focused primarily on mono mixes of their records from Please Please Me through the White Album. I've always preferred them to the stereo mixes, which can often feature awkward separation between vocals and the instruments. If you were one of the people who struggled with poor pressings of the stereo box in 2012, I'm told the mono set will be pressed in Germany with superior quality control. The new records will be available separately as well as in a box set with a book, so fans will have a number of ways to enjoy The Beatles again as they were meant to be heard! See promo video and Apple press release below. Learn more at Michael Fremer's Analog Planet here. Also make sure to check out the new Blu-ray edition of A Hard Days Night from the Criterion Collection. Box set image from The Beatles. Record scans from The Beatles Collection.

"London – June 16, 2014 – The Beatles in mono: This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960s, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary. Newly mastered from the analogue master tapes, this limited 14-LP boxed edition, The Beatles In Mono, includes a 108-page hardbound book.

In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles’ acclaimed mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY®-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz. While The Beatles In Mono CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.

Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles’ albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.

Manufactured for the world at Optimal Media in Germany, The Beatles’ albums are presented in their original glory, both sonically and in their packaging. The boxed collection’s exclusive 12-inch by 12-inch hardbound book features new essays and a detailed history of the mastering process by award-winning radio producer and author Kevin Howlett. The book is illustrated with many rare studio photos of The Beatles, fascinating archive documents, and articles and advertisements sourced from 1960s publications."

CODENAME: FATHER

Happy Father's Day from Spy Vibe. Agents John Steed and Tara King of The Avengers reported primarily to a male controller, codename: Mother. But the Ministry hierarchy also included a female leader, codename: Father. She appeared briefly in the series 6 episode, Stay Tuned in 1969. In keeping with the show's eccentric character development, she was blind and relied on super hearing to navigate. Costume designer Ivy Baker outfitted Father with large dark glasses (ala 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse) and a drab gray coat with conservative pin, which telegraphed her slightly sinister character. She was played by Iris Russell, a Scottish actress who had appeared in early episodes of The Avengers and may be best known as Jean Skinner on Timeslip (1970-1971). In a verbal-connection to Ian Fleming, she also played "Judith Strageways" in The Moonraker (1958). Russell passed away in February, 2014. Father's second appearance in The Avengers universe was in the 1998 film adaptation, played by Fiona Shaw. Younger Spy Vibers may remember Shaw from Gormenghast, True Blood, and as Aunt Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter films. Once again the costuming was gray and ominous, now adding a white streak of hair. A sign of duplicity? Readers can find out when the film is released on Blu-ray on August 12th. Happy Sunday and report to your fathers.

SUMMER BLU-RAY SPIES

Summer Blu-ray releases: The 1998 adaption of The Avengers starring Uma Thurman, Ralph Fiennes, and Sean Connery hits shops on August 12th. Although the movie was a pale reflection of the original series, it might be fun to revisit if only for some of the design work. From Blu-ray: "THE AVENGERS, the hip secret-agent series from '60s TV, is reinvented for the movies with a stylish blend of wit, fabulous retro fashions and effects-packed action. Ralph Fiennes is the very dapper John Steed and Uma Thurman is the smartly catsuited Emma Peel, two secret agents who fight crime with style. Sean Connery portrays Sir August De Wynter, an evil genius out to control the world with his high-tech weather machine. This madman poses quite a threat with his raging icestorms, scorching temperatures, and mechanical buzz-bombing bees. But come cold, heat or dreaded plight, our two heroes never lose their cool. Tea anyone?" You can pre-order on the Best Buy site, but no Amazon page has appeared yet on our radar.

A new Blu-ray edition of Michael Caine's classic spy film, The Ipcress File (1965), will be released this summer from Network. Often hailed as the "Criterion Collection" for cult TV and movies, Network has been working on a Hi-def upgrade to their DVD. Highlights porting over to Blu-ray include interviews with Michael Caine and designer Ken Adam. From the press release: "Featuring a quintessential performance from multiple Oscar-winner Sir Michael Caine and an iconic score from the legendary John Barry, this stylised and compelling Cold War spy movie won multiple awards on its theatrical release - including three BAFTAs. The Ipcress File is featured here in a High Definition transfer made from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Harry Palmer, a stubbornly insolent sergeant working for the Ministry of Defence, is less than thrilled to be transferred to an elite counter-intelligence unit under threat of blackmail. Palmer and the rest of his unit follow the trail of a missing scientist, but when he finds a piece of tape marked "IPCRESS" in an abandoned warehouse he suddenly becomes a marked man…" The Ipcress File is often out-of-print in the States. And with Anchor Bay's Harry Palmer box set also available, it may be time to add a multi-region player to your Spy Vibe lair! Street date is July 28th. Marketed as "the thinking man's Goldfinger," Len Deighton's seminal story was brought to the screen by talent from the James Bond circle, including John Barry, Harry Saltzman, Ken Adam, and Peter Hunt. Learn more at the Deighton Dossier. Spy Vibe's post about the creative cinematography and depth-staging in The Ipcress File here.

British distributors Eureka will release Fritz Lang's classic Frau Im Mond (Woman in the Moon) in the UK on August 25th. Starring the cast of his must-see SPIES, this Sci-Fi story sports an espionage set-up. From Blu-rayIn this, Lang's final silent epic, the legendary filmmaker spins a tale involving a wicked cartel of spies who co-opt an experimental mission to the moon in the hope of plundering the satellite's vast (and highly theoretical) stores of gold. When the crew, helmed by Willy Fritsch and Gerda Maurus (both of whom had previously starred in Lang's Spione), finally reach their impossible destination, they find themselves stranded in a lunar labyrinth without walls- where emotions run scattershot, and the new goal becomes survival.

"A modern Daedalus tale which uncannily foretold Germany's wartime push into rocket-science, Frau im Mond is as much a warning-sign against human hubris as it is a hopeful depiction of mankind's potential. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present in a Dual Format (Blu-ray + DVD) special edition the culmination of Fritz Lang's silent cinema, restored to its near-original length."

Special Features:
  • Gorgeous 1080p transfer on the Blu-ray of the F. W. Murnau-Stiftung restoration
  • Original German intertitles with newly-translated optional English subtitles
  • The First Scientific Science-Fiction Film – a German documentary about Frau im Mond. made by Gabriele Jacobi [15:00]
  • 36-page booklet which includes a newly revised analysis by Michael E. Grost on the film, and on Fritz Lang's body of work as a whole — and more!
