CHRISTOPHER LEE R.I.P.
Sad news today in the Spy Vibe world. Actor Christopher Lee passed away at the age of 93. Famous for his many great villain roles, Lee was a cousin to Ian Fleming and played 007's nemesis in The Man With the Golden Gun (1974). Co-star Roger Moore sent Twitter messages out today to family and fans expressing his sadness. Christopher Lee expressed a great love for acting and worked steadily between 1948-2015. He was preparing a new project at the time of his death. We'll miss his deep voice and great presence. The actor was often asked about his wartime experiences and whether he was a spy, to which he answered, "Let's just say I was in Special Forces and leave it at that. People can read into that what they like." Celebrate Christopher Lee's life with some of the great performances from his career: The Wicker Man (1973), Horror of Dracula (1958), Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), Gormenghast (2000), The Blood of Fu Manchu (1968), The Castle of Fu Manchu (1969), and The Avengers TV episodes Never Say Die (season 5 disc 4) and The Interrogators (season 6 disc 5). You can also sit with Lee and hear about his life as an actor in The Many Faces of Christopher Lee (1996). I'm a bit pressed by deadlines today, but Spy Vibers can learn more about Christopher Lee, Ian Fleming, and Spying over at our fellow agent's site, Artistic License Renewed. Below: Lee with Ursula Andress (Dr. No, Casino Royale, The 10th Victim) in 1973 from Getty Images. The pair starred together in the 1965 classic, She.

SAINT DOPPELGANGER
I love discovering design doppelgängers from the Cold War and this week we feature a pair of book covers from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Featuring the Saint by Leslie Charteris was published by Avon (Avon #803) in 1958, although it's noteworthy that my copy does not include the year or illustration credits. The use of an open silhouette figure over a color background was popular at the time and continued through the early 1960s as a typical design approach to mysteries and thrillers (see our post: Rare Fleming). The book contained short stories originally published in The Thriller magazine and were first compiled by Hodder and Stoughton in 1931. Two of the stories were adapted for The Saint TV series with Roger Moore in 1964 and 1965. The cover design then resurfaced on the front of a book by French publisher Presses de la Cite in 1961 for their edition of Un Dur de la Feuille by Roger Henri Nova (also known as Roger Faller, Roger Menanteau, Henri Grival- he had many aliases!). One the writer's novels inspired the 1966 film, Plainte centre X. Although I can imagine most genre stories could have been packaged with this coupling of an anonymous hero with pistol and the fallen female character, we can only wonder if the dark silhouette in the middle ground with bowler and mustache resonated with readers on both sides of the Atlantic. Often times designs were recycled, but recreated by other artists. In this case, the foundation images were exactly the same. There is a slight variation in the background color gradients, but that may be a result of the photographs. Intriguing! See some of Spy Vibe's Design Doppelgängers and related cover designs here: Rare Fleming, Double 007 Design, Double 007 Design II, Design Doppelgängers. Learn more about The Saint. Enjoy!

DEADLIER THAN THE MALE
New release: The 1967 classic Deadlier Than the Male was released today on Blu-ray! Based on the Bulldog Drummond series, the movie starred Elke Sommer, Sylvie Koscina, and Richard Johnson. Promotional materials for the movie traditionally featured images from the film's unforgettable sequence with girl assassins in bikinis with spearguns (see Japanese poster below), but that was only one of the amazing set-pieces in the film. If you are curious to explore slightly less mainstream 1960s spy movies and/or Eurospy, this is definitely in the top-five and not to be missed. Network's Blu-ray maintains the original 1.66:1 widescreen print and includes standard-def extras like on-set featurettes, theatrical trailer, interviews, image galleries and promo materials. No word yet if Network will follow up with the sequel, Some Girls Do. Spy Vibers outside of the UK will require a multi-region player to play this Region B disc. AmazonUK page here. You can find the 2003 standard NTSC DVD edition on Amazon here. Star Richard Johnson's career included classics like The Haunting (1963), Operation Crossbow (1965), Deadlier Than the Male (1967), Danger Route (1967), and Some Girls Do (1969). Johnson passed away on Saturday at the age of 87. New York Times obituary here.
From Network: "Richard Johnson gives a suave performance as Hugh 'Bulldog' Drummond in this cool '60s take on the exploits of H.C. McNeile's famous fictional hero. Giving Bond a run for his money, Deadlier Than the Male sees Drummond involved with daring escapes, murderous plots, femmes fatales and dolly birds by the score! The film is presented here as a High Definition transfer from the original film elements in its original aspect ratio. When insurance underwriter Hugh Drummond learns of the deaths of top oil executives – at the hands of a pair of beautiful but brutal female assassins – he is convinced that it is the work of an international crime syndicate."

FLEMING'S TYPEWRITER
Fleming Week Continues: Fleming's Typewriter. My Art students and I have wrapped up another school year, and I find myself diving into an even busier schedule writing the manuscript to a new book about the spy boom (details soon!) and planning a visit to Elstree Studios, Portmeirion, and various locations used in classic 1960s TV series. But before we rush off on summer missions, I invite Spy Vibers to pause and recognize an important date on the Spy Vibe calendar. 007 creator Ian Fleming was born on May 28th, 1908. We are celebrating his birthday all week with new articles based on Spy Vibe's most popular posts about our favorite author.
Ian Fleming fans have long wondered who the mystery buyer was who purchased the author's gold Royal typewriter from Christie's in 1995. There was much speculation this rare artifact went to Pierce Brosnan, but the former 007 actor denied the claim. Meanwhile, collectors have continued to hunt for gold editions of the Royal Quiet Deluxe. Royal began producing the gold model in limited editions starting in 1947. Fleming ordered his typewriter in 1952 to celebrate (and revise) his first 007 novel, Casino Royale. We sometimes see Gold Royals on eBay, but the models always seem to be a slightly different design. I believe someone out there is working on a database to catalog the typewriters and their design variations. It has been suggested that Royal Golds were designed by different designers over the years. But what made Ian Fleming's circa 1952 model unique? Below: Fleming's typewriter.
To explore this question, I asked agent Cary Mark to tell us about his father's 1953 Gold Royal, similar to the one Fleming owned. "The Fleming model is more streamlined and has rounded front corners, compared to the square model one sees on eBay. You can see that the gold case runs in front of the black space bar. The other model has squared-off front corners and the black space bar looks totally different at the very front of the typewriter. The two levers on the front panel that control ribbon color and ribbon reverse look totally different on both models, as well as the trim surrounding them. Since they are different models, I am guessing that many of the individual parts are different and not interchangeable." Below: Close-up views of Cary Mark's Royal.
The auction literature from Christie's had this to report about Fleming's famous model, sold as Lot 122 in 1995. Price Realized: Just over $89,000.00! Sales totals are hammer price plus buyer’s premium and do not reflect costs, financing fees or application of buyer’s or seller’s credits. Estimate £5,000 - £8,000 ($7,995 - $12,792). Below: vintage Royal ad.
"Lot Description: IAN LANCASTER FLEMING (1908-64) A Royal Quiet De Luxe portable typewriter, circa 1952, with gold-plated body and fittings, four-row keyboard, 11 x 11 x 6in., in composition carrying case, the attached paper tag with printed address: "The Pantechnicon, Heathfield Terrace" and manuscript inscription: "Mrs I. Fleming 4, 23-2-73." Provenance: By direct descent to the Hon. Mrs Fionn Morgan, the writer's stepdaughter (sold with a letter of provenance).
"Lot Notes: Ian Fleming commissioned this typewriter from the Royal Typewriter Company in New York in the spring of 1952, as a replacement for his old Imperial. The first draft of the novel Casino Royale, introducing 007 agent James Bond, had been read enthusiastically by Fleming's publishers Jonathan Cape. However they commented that 'although the details were original and interesting ... the book, though publishable, needed extensive revision.' For this revision, Fleming had chosen a symbol to remind himself where, with luck, his future lay. This was a new typewriter to replace his old Imperial, a golden typewriter. He had ordered it in New York and on May 17th, some weeks before submitting the manuscript to his publisher, he wrote to a his friend Ivar Bryce in New York asking him to bring the typewriter over on his next trip to England: 'Here is one vital request. I am having constructed for me by the Royal Typewriter Company a golden typewriter which is to cost $174. I will not tell you why I am acquiring this machine.'

"The gold-plated typewriter duly arrived and Fleming completed the revised manuscript which was accepted by Jonathan Cape for publication the following April. Fleming typed all his subsequent novels on this gleaming but compact machine that seems to encapsulate the half-fantasy world of ostentatious 1950's gadgetry so familiar from the Bond novels themselves." Below: Cary Mark's Royal.
Ian Fleming's typewriter holds much fascination for me. As a vital artifact, it is the very conduit between the author's imagination and the words tapping out, one at a time like beads on a thread, to become Casino Royale, Moonraker, Dr. No, Goldfinger. The Royal transports me back in time like a Tardis and I can imagine the thoughts forming on the page: "The eyes behind the wide black rubber goggles were cold as flint. In the howling speed-turmoil of a BSA M20 doing seventy, they were the only quiet things in the hurtling flesh and metal. Protected by the glass of the goggles, they stared fixedly ahead from just above the centre of the handlebars, and their dark unwavering focus was that of gun muzzles" (From a View to a Kill). Astonishing! Like my experiences looking at original Beatles instruments, seeing the Royal brings me closer to those moments of creation. I wonder if Fleming's original Royal will be exhibited in the future? Below: My collage of images: the author and his Royal Gold with Cary Mark's X key.
