PRISONER SUPERGRASS

The Village from the 1960s cult TV classic, The Prisoner, has become the theme of the week, as more videos join XTC in the list of cool Portmeirion projects. The band Supergrass filmed this promo for Alright Personalizer in 1995. And this time, Spy Vibers are treated to footage shot all over Portmeirion. The video begins on the estuary sands during low tide and eventually moves into the Village proper, with scenes shot around many of the major buildings and sites in the main piazza and Battery Square. We even catch a glimpse of the miles of roads that lead to the entrance and wind through the woods around The Village. Thematically, the band also chose to root the video in the 1960s by being rolled through locations on a wheeled bed, referencing Richard Lester's The Knack... and How to Get It (1965) and The Monkees TV series (1966-1968). Seeing three guys goofing off on bikes also reminded me of a Goodies (1970-1982) vibe, albeit without the witty jump-cuts and cinematic illusions. Alright Personalizer had a following and reached #2 in the UK singles chart. According to some reports, Steven Spielberg thought Supergrass could even lead a new Monkees TV series. The band, who hailed from Oxford, continued on and off with group and solo projects since their success during the 1990s Britpop era. They split officially in 2010 after a series of farewell concerts. Their final album remains unreleased. JOHN BARRY'S KNACK SOUNDTRACK

The Spy Vibe world lost one of the great composers recently when John Barry passed away in January. We celebrated his career, including the James Bond films and The Ipcress File, and highlighted Barry's score to the mod classic, The Knack... And How to Get it (1965). Screen Archives Entertainment announced today that they are releasing a limited-edition run of the soundtrack (1,000 units), transferred directly from the MGM studio master tapes. The new release will not include dialog from the film, which fans may remember hearing on the out-of-print Ryko CD from 1998. From Screen Archives Entertainment:

"Long-awaited and necessary new edition of a master classic by John Barry—one of his most influential works from the sixties. The Knack…and how to get it—winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1965—is an unforgettable film, a symbol of a generation, and a true witness of its time. Smart and sexy, the film was the first collaboration between John Barry and Richard Lester (a partnership that would be repeated in 1969 with Petulia and in 1976 with Robin and Marian). Barry's music is vibrant, funny, powerfully melodic, and well-remembered as an icon of the Swinging London movement.

The Knack was previously released on CD by Ryko in 1998 but that version has been out-of-print for many years. Our edition is based on a new transfer from the original stereo tapes housed in the M-G-M vaults, resulting in sound quality that is much improved. We have removed the dialogue included on the Ryko edition to offer the same musical experience and track order prepared by Barry for the original 1965 United Artists Records LP. The deluxe booklet includes 24 pages with lots of stills and new liner notes by Geoff Leonard and Pete Walker. A necessary tribute, sadly posthumous, to one of the greatest, most celebrated and influential composers in film history: John Barry." Spy Vibe John Barry obituary here. JOHN BARRY: THE KNACK

Spy Vibe celebrates composer John Barry (1933-2011) this week: The Knack... And How To Get It (1965). The film, directed by Richard Lester, is an interesting time capsule of Mod youth grappling with independence and sexual awakening. The cast includes Rita Tushingham, Ray Brooks, Michael Crawford (How I Won the War), and uncredited appearances by Jacqueline Bisset (Casino Royale, Bullitt) and Barry's second wife, Jane Birkin. The film captures some of Lester's own 'knack' for mid-1960s UK surreal humor and visuals, as well as some groovy organ music from Barry! The two also collaborated on Petulia and Robin and Marion. This particular trailer has been cut in Jean Luc Godard fashion -with a repetition of cues and, well... groping- that highlights the overall sexual tension in the story. Fans of The Monkees will recognize a familiar scene of a bed being rolled down the street- a bit of borrowed, surrealist Lester? I encourage Spy Vibers to seek out the complete score and film for the full experience. And if you're looking to add to your collection of organ grooves for cruising, this one is a classic!
