007 MANGA

New release: James Bond Manga. Takao Saito (Golgo 13) adapted four Ian Fleming titles for the Japanese comic (manga) market during the 1960s spy boom, covering material from Live and Let Die, Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and The Man With the Golden Gun. Serialized in one of the top boy's magazines, Saito's stories were then collected in paperback editions in the late 1960s and again in the 1980s. The books have been highly collectible and often fetch premium prices. Fans have wondered for decades if these elusive comics would ever again see the light of day. I'm happy to report our time has finally come! The set has been reprinted in Japan in paperback form. The jacket designs sport the new Ian Fleming Publications 007 logo. As they appear to be officially licensed reprints, many of us are hoping English translations will be planned for future release in the style of Jiro Kuwata's Batman series. I was so thrilled to hear this news a couple of weeks ago from fellow agent Jhalal Drut. Even with my collection of Japanese James Bond and Man From U.N.C.L.E. books, I had only collected one original Saito manga due to cost. Now we can all afford to see his comic book vision of Fleming's secret agent! My sister site Double O Section ordered copies of the set and has already posted a wonderful historical overview and review HERE. Now with Saito's 007 back in print, I wonder if we'll see new editions of other 1960s manga such as Green Hornet and Saito's Man From U.N.C.L.E. (Napoleon Solo). Enjoy! GREEN HORNET MANGA

A number of Mystery/Adventure and Pulp properties were licensed in Japan in the 1960s to be adapted into manga series. Saito's pre-Golgo 13 work on James Bond and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is legendary (and remains untranslated), and Kuwata's Batman has had a resurgence due to the loving efforts of designer Chip Kidd (the complete collection will finally be published in English this Dec). Adventures of The Green Hornet and his Karate-master chauffeur, Kato, were released in Japanese by Toru Yamazaki in 1967 (a contemporary creator named Toru Yamazaki published Octopus Girl). Few images of the Hornet manga have surfaced outside of the collector's market, but here are some samples that might spark your interest. The Green Hornet has also appeared in the pages of Harvey, Gold Key, Now, DC, and Dynamite Comics. Kevin Smith, Ralph Garman, and Ty Templeton are currently publishing a series through DC that continues the Batman/Green Hornet TV crossover from March, 1967. U.N.C.L.E. JAPANESE EDITIONS

Open channel D! Continuing our look at unusual book designs this week, we turn the spotlight on Japanese editions of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. My first introduction to book collecting in Japan was when I first moved there as a college student. Continuing the Saturday routine of treasure-hunting, I stumbled across a pile of spy paperbacks at a used bookshop. Inside the stack of classic Bonds were a few U.N.C.L.E. titles- and a new fascination with Japanese editions was born!

As you may have read yesterday, the main publisher for 1960s mystery and Sci-Fi in Japan was Hayakawa (see James Bond: Japanese Editions). The company was founded by Kiyoshi Hayakawa in 1945. As I posted, Hayakawa printed paperback editions of genre books, using a variety of designs over the years that included illustrations and production stills. Their main design concept for all of their books and series, however, was to place mystery and Sci-Fi in the world of modern expressionism through the use of abstract paintings. One of the coolest features of the early releases was the addition of slipcases! Hayakawa's attention to spy-boom era titles included many Man From U.N.C.L.E. books, as well as a handful of Girl From U.N.C.L.E. titles. Most of the editions in Spy Vibe's collection used photo-cover designs with Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, but an internet search has revealed many abstract-painting covers as well. And just like the U.N.C.L.E. books made for the UK and US markets, each volume in the set was numbered. The Hayakawa U.N.C.L.E. series (called Napoleon Solo) included at least sixteen novels. There was also a manga by Takao Saito (Golgo 13), which makes me curious to learn more about U.N.C.L.E.'s broadcast history in Japan! Stay tuned tomorrow for an exciting return to The 10th Victim.

U.N.C.L.E. AND BATMAN MANGA

Takao Saito, creator of Golgo 13, adapted James Bond and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. for the Japanese manga market in the 1960s. The stories were serialized in comic digests and collected for release as paperbacks. Saito's spy manga are some of the hardest artifacts to track down and it's a rare treat when collectors get to see examples of this work. The James Bond and U.N.C.L.E. books rarely appear on eBay and tend to be listed between $100-$300. Here are some rare examples of Saito's U.N.C.L.E manga, Napoleon Solo. It's fun to see how Saito fashioned the characters in the style of Golgo 13 and brought familiar secret agents into the dynamic world of his comic pages. It has been suggested that the style of Golgo 13 was derived from these earlier spy manga, which may have been cancelled due to legal issues. I'd love to see a large collection translated into English in the style of Chip Kidd's Batmanga (hear that, Chip?). Incidentally, Batman appeared alongside Solo in Shonen Magazine and I have included some pages by Jiro Kuwata below.

SOLO BY SAITO

While looking through images on the Internet of Takao Saito's James Bond manga adaptations of Ian Fleming (he did four books before starting his Golgo 13 series), I came across a number of Man From UNCLE comics he made under the title 0011 Napoleon Solo. I wonder if any Spy Vibers have collected these editions? Has anyone found scanned pages out there? I'd love to see more. I found these and few other shots at a message board here.
