Event Alert: A new exhibit is coming to Bletchley Park to celebrate James Bond and Ian Fleming, and the opening event will include a reception and Q&A with 007 continuation author Anthony Horowitz, historians, and contributing artists. From the press releases: "This summer James Bond comes to Bletchley Park. On display in Hut 12, a temporary art exhibition celebrates Ian Fleming’s original James Bond series, as well as the most recent 007 novels written by Anthony Horowitz. It also includes a special section presenting new research into Fleming’s connection to Bletchley Park and explores how his work in naval intelligence helped inspire the creation of the James Bond books. The newly commissioned artworks have been created for a project by Eazl with a specially selected roster of emerging and mid-career artists from the UK and beyond. Participating artists include Threadneedle Prize finalists David Storey and Tomas Tichy, the Australian painter Marc Freeman, and the prize-winning illustrator Finn Dean. The pieces are each inspired by a specific scene, theme or character from a James Bond novel. The exhibition is part of a wider project organised by social enterprise Eazl, with the kind permission of Ian Fleming Publications. The project will culminate in a charity auction in London, in October 2018. The exhibition coincides with the release of the second official Bond novel by Horowitz ‘Forever and a Day’, the follow up to the critically acclaimed ‘Trigger Mortis’." More below.
Opening Reception May 22 from 11:00-13:00. Author Anthony Horowitz OBE will open this temporary art exhibition to be displayed at Bletchley Park. With newly commissioned artworks celebrating Ian Fleming’s original James Bond series, as well as the most recent 007 novels written by Horowitz, the exhibition also explores how Fleming’s work in Naval Intelligence helped inspire his writing and uncovers his links to Bletchley Park. There will be an introduction from Dr. David Kenyon, Bletchley Park Research Historian and Anthony Horowitz, followed by a private view of the exhibition. Includes the opportunity to interview participating artists and Anthony Horowitz.

The band Man Or Astroman? started in the early 1990s with a fun cocktail of blistering surf-punk guitar and frequent nods to classic sci-fi and cult faves. Fans of MST3K might remember the band's cover of the main theme, not to mention that many of the group's recordings begin with sound samples from cheesy MST flicks. Here's their cover of the Man From U.N.C.L.E. theme from their 1995 album, Project Infinity. Serial Squadron has announced they are working on a new restoration of the classic cliffhanger serial, Spy Smasher. The character started out in the pages of Fawcett's Whiz Comics (where Captain Marvel was originally published), and focussed on a master detective who used wits, brawn, and gadgetry (including a Gyrosub) to fight evildoers. Republic Pictures produced a twelve-chapter serial starring Kane Richmond as the title character (and his twin brother). Production began in December of 1941, just before the alliance between the Allies was formalized (on January 1, 1942) during WWII. Consequently, the character Spy Smasher acted as an independent agent to thwart a Nazi baddie called The Mask, who operated from an offshore submarine. The Mask's schemes included trying to destroy the economy with counterfeit money and sabotaging aircraft, oil, and munitions. Spy Smasher's Gyrosub was changed to the memorable "Bat Plane", a v-shaped flying wing. Released over 12 chapters, movie goers saw the theatrical debut of Spy Smasher on April 4th, 1942. An abridged version was later cut for TV release in 1966 as Spy Smasher Returns. Serial Squadron hopes to release the DVD this fall, and depending on resolution, may also offer a Blu-ray edition.
