HUGH HEFNER R.I.P.

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner has passed away. Hef grew up dreaming of becoming a cartoonist, but found that his greater talents lay in his ability to envision a personal view and approach to living that, as it turned out, many men could relate to. The would-be cartoonist and his creation, Playboy, became a major influence in the 1950s and 1960s, entertaining a way of life based on pleasure, curiosity, and a male aesthetic. He rebelled against the stifling Puritan traditions in the culture, calling out their hypocrisies, and rejected the post-war American ideal based on family and a suburban lifestyle. Instead, he championed what he believed to be a liberating outlook rooted in natural instincts (from a male-fantasy point of view) and his magazine sported gorgeous gals, cutting-edge humor and fiction (he said James Bond and Playboy were a natural pair), hi-tech gadgets, and images of modern pads that electrified the imaginations of men weary of caving to the nine-to-five paradigm of the grey flannel suit-set. History professor Elizabeth Fraterrigo has written a study of the magazine’s influence: “In the 1950s and 1960s, Playboy promoted a decidedly masculine vision for the realms of home, work, and leisure in its textual and literal construction of their spatial corollaries- the bachelor pad, the white-collar office, and the realm of urban nightlife- which served as counterpoints to the cultural emphasis on the suburban-situated nuclear-family home. Through its magazine, television programs, and key-clubs, Playboy identified spaces where men could craft and nurture a masculine identity based on style, leisure, and consumption” (Elizabeth Fraterrigo/UNLV). He was a well-known movie fan and he shared his passion through film preservation and conservation and regular screenings of classic movies at his mansion. Hef was also a patron of the arts and champion of free speech and civil rights. He used the Playboy banner to host an annual jazz festival, as well as to spotlight innovative and revolutionary thinkers and entertainers on his television programs, Playboy's Penthouse and Playboy After Dark (I recommend the Lenny Bruce and Pete Seeger episodes). One of his most controversial debates was with William F. Buckley Jr. in 1966 (watch it on Youtube). His political work continued into his final years, proclaiming that the fight for gay marriage was the continuing fight for the sexual revolution against our past, puritanical times. Hef was married five times and had four children. He finally hung up his velvet robe and left today at the age of ninety-one. Mark Hammill posted today on Twitter: "1st met him months B4 Star Wars opened- Expected stereotyped swinger/wildman not the kind-thoughtful loyal friend he always was to ML and me." Rest in peace. Related posts: Interview: Playboy Deana and Swinging London.

SPY-FI EVENT

Upcoming Event: Hello, Chief? If you ever wanted to see the original screen-used props and costumes from 1960s spy shows and films, your chance is coming up soon as LA prepares for a special event and exhibit. Danny Biederman (The Incredible World of Spy-Fi) will be hosting an evening at the Hollywood Heritage Museum in October! This is a rare opportunity for Spy Vibers to see his amazing collection up close. From the press release: "On Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 at 7:30PM Hollywood Heritage and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will be kicking off the new season of the Evening @ the Barn series with a unique event on a special night! The Incredible World of Spy-Fi will feature a discussion on and a selection of Danny Biederman's world-famous original props from iconic spy movies and TV shows. Included in the display will be the famous shoe phone from Get Smart and the pen communicator from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Mr. Biederman will also be selling and signing copies of his book The Incredible World of SPY-FI. Following an intermission, the museum will present a screening of Mr. Biederman's "Hollywood Spytek", a documentary that contrasts the similarities between real spies and their fictional counterparts. The event will also feature a display of vintage spy toys from the 1960s! Don't miss this very rare opportunity to view Mr. Biedermans spy artifacts which have previously been displayed at the CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia and the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. There will also be a raffle consisting of related DVDs and books! Seating is limited. Doors open at 7:00PM. Free parking is available in the Hollywood Bowl Lot D." Tickets available here. If you haven't seen Danny's book yet, I highly recommend it. Just seeing pages devoted to Patrick Macnee's bowler and Diana Rigg's leather trousers from The Avengers is worth the price of admission! Below: images from Get Smart and a previous exhibit (posted by The Hitorialist). Hey, did you know Spy Vibe recently passed Two Million visitors? That was an exciting milestone! In other news, check out my episodes of the Cocktail Nation radio show, where I introduce classic spy films/TV series and play soundtracks and rare cuts: Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Episode #4 (Roger Moore/The Saint), and Episode #5 (The Avengers). Episode #6 (The Prisoner). JOHN LE CARRE EVENTS

Event alert: Novelist John le Carre will be speaking this week about his career, his new novel, and about the long literary life of his character George Smiley. "An Evening With George Smiley" will be held on September 7th at the Royal Festival Hall in London. More information at the John le Carre website. He also spoke with Terry Gross this evening on the interview program, Fresh Air, where he discussed his upbringing, career in MI5 and MI6, his mystery con-man father (and his Stasi file), and what it meant to discover the writing life. Listen on NPR. John le Carre had a massive hit with his 1963 novel The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, which was adapted into a feature film in 1965 starring Richard Burton (Look Back in Anger, Where Eagles Dare), Oskar Werner (Jules and Jim, Fahrenheit 451), and Claire Bloom (Look Back in Anger). The character George Smiley has appeared in many film and television adaptations of le Carre novels, most notably portrayed by Alec Guinness (Tinker Tailar Soldier Spy/1979, Smiley's People/1982, James Mason (The Deadly Affair/1966), and most recently by Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy/2011). Check out the Fresh Air interview, and do make it to the live event in London if you are in town.

BOND CURIOUS CONCERT

Upcoming Event: After enjoying a wonderful afternoon last year with Tom Cull of Artistic License Renewed and Jon Lys Turner at the Curious Arts festival to celebrate Jon's book about 007 illustrator Richard Chopping and artist Denis Wirth-Miller, I'm happy to see the Ian Fleming connection continue this summer. The festival has just announced a special program of James Bond music with the Royal Philharmonic! From the press release: "We are thrilled to announce that the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will be closing this year’s Curious Arts Festival with a sensational evening celebrating over 50 thrilling years of iconic songs and themes from films about everyone’s favourite secret service agent – 007! This is a night of 00Heaven featuring musical highlights from some of the best Bond films ever such as ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Licence to Kill’, ‘You Only Live Twice’, ‘Diamonds are Forever’, Live and Let Die’,‘Goldeneye’, ‘From Russia with Love’, ‘Skyfall’, ‘Casino Royale’ and many more. The concert will take place in the Gorse Tent on Sunday 23rd July – approximate start time 7.15pm. Tickets are strictly limited for this performance. " I found this to be a pretty unusual festival last year. Events were hosted in large tents scattered throughout a bucolic field, and there seemed to be a caravan of food trucks, massage tables, fortunes, kids activities, etc circling the main encampment. At the center was a marvelous book tent. I must point out that the organizers rightly state Curious Arts is an "experience, not just a few tents in a field." It was cool to see so many authors doing readings and book signings. There was something for everyone. I was even lucky to find sushi there! This year's line-up includes a long list of authors, poets, musicians, and comedians. If Spy Vibers can make it, I recommend bundling up in layers in case of cold weather and wind. It's a beautiful drive through the New Forest, but go slowly and make sure to say hello to the many friendly donkeys who roam the area. More info at Curious Arts FestivalSpy Vibers, have you heard my new radio show with Cocktail Nation? Episode #4 is coming up. Here are info links for Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service).
