Joining The Prisoner and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons in this season of 50th anniversary events, Spy Vibers can also look forward to celebrating the dark, classic series Callan on November 25th at the BFI. From the press release from Dick Fiddy: "We will screen an episode from Callan, the gritty, down-to-earth story of a professional killer working for a British espionage agency. It is followed by a panel discussion about the downbeat spy and his dangerous world. Joining us will be Peter Mitchell, son of Callan creator James Mitchell, and current ‘keeper of the flame." Tickets available at the BFI. Callan, starring Edward Woodward (The Equalizer, Breaker Morant, The Wicker Man), was first broadcast on February 4th, 1967. Spy Vibe has always been more about the world of fictional/fantasy spies rather than the real thing. Somehow the image of romancing foreign agents on international trips in an Aston Martin seems more accessible than the true world of deception and betrayal. But it has been interesting to look at true cases and perhaps see where some of the great writers got their ideas. And what gadget lover doesn't enjoy seeing just how ingenious those espionage boffins were during the Cold War. I suppose with our current chapter of the Cold War now emerging around us, it will interesting, and perhaps prudent, to have a stronger context in history- lest we be doomed to repeat it. Spy Vibe's collaboration with Cocktail Nation continues with Episode #7- now live and streaming! The film, based on Len Deighton's novel, featured Michael Caine as an outsider and reluctant spy thrown into the world of missing scientists, brainwashing, and a mole hunt. Many key crew members from the the James Bond franchise contributed to the project, cementing the film as one of the most important "non-Bond" entries during the great 1960s spy boom. The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan’s visionary television series, reaches the half century of its first UK transmission in September. In celebration, Network is returning to the place where it all began - the village, aka Portmeirion, to host a one day event for the launch of our new feature-length documentary plus a brand new Blu-ray and DVD edition. This unique day will bring together surviving cast, crew and other special guests alongside screenings of key episodes from brand new 35mm prints, Q&A’s, installations and more.
