PERSUADERS 50 SET

Greetings, Spy Vibers! Some cool Persuaders news just crossed my radar. In honor of the show's 50th anniversary, UK distributor Network is releasing a set featuring a 50th celebration Blu-ray, a 140-page book by Jaz Wiseman covering the series and it's merchandising -with over 650 images! (Jaz must have the world's coolest ITC archive collection), and a 4-disc Blu-ray set of feature-film edits of the show. Looks amazing! A must for fans of The Persuaders, Roger Moore, and Tony Curtis. More info at Network. In other news, it's been a productive period here in the SpyVibe lair. My art students have been keeping me busy at school and I've been putting in a lot of 14-hour days over weekends and holidays to write the upcoming Spy Vibe book. And this weekend I'll be starting up my next series of installments for the Cocktail Nation radio show. I recently covered the Dr. Mabuse films for my book, so I think we'll let the good (er, bad) doctor kick things off. Also on the radar, I do hope some Spy Vibers were able to attend this year's Modernism Week in Palm Springs. I was putting in time to write my Prisoner section and aptly confined to home, but a number of friends were able to attend and it's been fun to see their photos. If you haven't been to Modernism Week, check it out. And if you want to go next time, make sure to book early. I hear everything fills up fast. OHMSS AT 50

On Her Majesty's Secret Service has its London premiere on this day in 1969! It was the sixth major film in the Bond franchise and marked the last project that would capture a 1960s vibe. Replacing Sean Connery in the lead was Australian model George Lazenby, who brought a special cocktail of athleticism, good looks, and youthful swagger to the role. OHMSS also featured a stellar cast and crew, including Diana Rigg (The Avengers), Telly Savalas (Kojak), Joanna Lumley (The New Avengers), designs by Syd Cain, and one of John Barry's very best scores. Often voted as the best of the series by fans, I think the film found its success by going deeper into Bond's emotional life and by capturing much of the rich adventure found in Ian Fleming's original novel. This Bond had heart! As a kid, I could enjoy the Connery and Moore films as hero-fantasy, but it was Lazenby who made me feel empathy for the character. It was such a favorite of mine that I even recorded a tape cassette off the TV speakers so I could listen to the story as an audio thriller. One of the main ways we create memory is by making emotional connections to our experiences. And as filmmakers hope to create those few indelible moments, my imagination is forever filled with Bond's breakneck escape down a mountain on skis at night, his visceral fear on screen as he tried to elude the killers in a crowd, and his relief seeing the woman of his dreams come to his rescue.
