RAY DAY

Ray Charles was born on this day in 1930. In addition to his powerful and genre-jumping contributions to music, Ray's style and presence also made him a fantastic subject for filmmakers and photographers. Spy Vibers might enjoy seeing some of his live appearances on Shindig! on-line. Ray also starred in the 1965 British film, Ballad in Blue, directed and written by Paul Henreid (Victor Lazlo from Casablanca), whose directing credits also included TV episodes of Alfred Hitchcock, The Third Man, and various westerns. In Ballad in Blue Ray plays himself in a musical drama where he attempts to help a hard-luck family with a blind son. Co-stars included Mary Peach (Doctor Who, The Saint), Dawn Addams (Vampire Lovers, Department S, The Saint, Danger Man, 1,000 Eyes of Dr,. Mabuse, The Third Man),  Betty McDowall (The Prisoner, The Liquidator, The Saint, Z Cars). Cinematography was by Robert Huge (You Only Live Twice). UK distributor Network released Blu-ray and DVD editions a few years back. From the press release: "Making his only major film appearance, legendary soul singer, musician and composer Ray Charles helps transform the lives of a blind boy and his widowed mother in this poignant, uplifting film drama set in mid-1960s London. Presented in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements showing the maximum filmed picture area, Ballad in Blue sees Charles – who had lost his sight completely by the age of eight – performing some of his best-loved songs, including I Got a Woman, Hit the Road, Jack and Busted. During a performance for blind children, global star Ray Charles befriends David, a young boy who has recently lost his sight, and tries to help him come to terms with his condition. Then, during a world tour, Charles finds himself in Paris, where a surgeon is pioneering a radical procedure that could restore David's sight; he sets out not only to convince David's over-protective mother to allow her son to undergo the surgery, but also to reconcile her with her boyfriend, a struggling composer who seeks solace in alcohol." SYLVIE VARTAN RENOWN

The fabulous Bulgarian-French Sylvie Vartan (b. Aug 15, 1944) began her road to Ye Ye stardom in 1961 when her brother encouraged her to record some songs. She made an EP for Decca, which became a hit, and an early TV appearance inspired journalists to dub her the "Twisting Schoolgirl." By the mid-60s she was married to rocker Johnny Hallyday, recording hits, making movies (her first role was in Bulgaria at age 8), staring in TV specials, appearing on Ed Sullivan, Shindig!, Hullabaloo, and touring the world. One project that contributed to her success in Asia was this commercial for Renown- a Japanese clothing company (founded 1902) that had launched a women's ready-to-wear line a few years earlier in 1962. The ad featured a song for Renown she recorded while on tour in Japan, Wansaka Musume. A few different postings attribute the ad to 1965 or 1967, but I believe the former is likely the correct year given the design focus on Op Art. She also mentions the Japan tour and song toward the end of her 1964 diary on-line. Wansaka Musume is basically about enjoying activities throughout the year during the different seasons such as swimming, tennis, and driving. My pal translator Fred Schodt had this to say about the title: "Wansaka usually means “lots” “tons,” so forth. Not exactly sure how it would translate with musume, but in the contexts of this fab CM, it seems to mean lots of young fashionable young Renown girls!" The group Blonde on Blonde (Nina Carter/Jilly Johnson) released a cover of the tune in 1978. DARC 66

Mireille Darc (1938-2017) was a French model and actress, and longtime companion of actor Alain Delon. Known for her roles in The Tall Blond Man With One Black Shoe (1972) and Weekend (1967), Spy Vibers might know her from her appearances in some spy spoofs and Eurospy films such as Operation Gold (1966), The Blonde From Peking (1967), The Upper Hand (1966), and The Great Spy Chase (1965). These designs from some of her 1965-1966 films caught my eye because they capture that brief window in the mid-1960s when designers reduced fashion and graphics down to stylized, geometric patterns, and the wave of Op Art and Pop Art was in full bloom.
