ALAIN RESNAIS TURNS 91

Happy Birthday to director Alain Resnais, who turns 91 today. Resnais came into his own as an artist in the late 1950s with Art House successes like Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) and Last Year At Marienbad (1961). His films expressed a Left-Bank interest in modernism, memory, and politics. Resnais built his career on a number of documentaries, including one of the first films to look at the Holocaust, Night and Fog (1955). He was already a professional by the first stirrings of the French New Wave, a group he is sometimes associated with. Resnais: "Although I was not fully part of the New Wave because of my age, there was some mutual sympathy and respect between myself and Rivette, Bazin, Demy, Truffaut... So I felt friendly with that team." Resnais married his second wide, Sabine Azema, in 1998. Spy Vibe wishes him many happy returns!
