HOLIDAYS & JUDEX

Happy Holidays, Spy Vibers! I hope everyone is staying safe and enjoying some time. I've been using my break from teaching to work on the upcoming Spy Vibe book. Research took me back deep into the world of Feuillade recently. Gaumont released his thriller serials from the 1910s (Tih-Minh and Judex) on Blu-ray- and they managed to ship them to me in the US for free within four days! Great service and great films! Tih-Minh was especially gorgeous and I found both the espionage angle and character melodrama really compelling. I revisited a doc again last night about Franju's lush 1963 version of Judex and I got really interested in one of the inspirations for the film. Co-writer Jacques Champreux (Feuillade's grandson) had found a copy of a book of engravings by JJ Grandville of anthropomorphized birds, which then prompted the idea that they could use bird masks for the masked ball scene introducing Judex in their movie. It ended up being the signature imagery from the film (video below)! The bird disguises, plus Channing Pollock's magician act, really set the stage for an expressionistic, fantasy atmosphere for their thriller. It's one of my favorite films. Here are some engravings by JJ Grandville and from Franju's Judex, as well as a holiday card I made (I added the text) from one of JJ Grandville's 1844 pieces. This artwork was from Another World and I find it so amazingly proto-Art Nouveau for its time! Linda Ronstadt told me it looked like electric lights were already invented, which was a great point. His work was really lovely and surreal, and this one seems to defy his era in many ways. Happy Holidays! JUDEX BLU

New Release: Judex (1916) coming to Blu-ray! Spy Vibers who love the thriller serials of Louis Feuillade like Fantomas and Les Vampires will be psyched to hear that Gaumont is giving Judex the hi-res treatment at last! Feuillade’s 1916 project focussed on a mysterious caped avenger, a master of disguise, who operated from a secret lair with an array of cool gadgets a la Bruce Wayne. His name: Judex! From what I can glean from the Gaumont website, the new Blu-ray edition will include English subtitles (I hope that's right!) and a 17-min featurette. Viewers will probably need an all-region or region B player. Releasing on December 8th on Blu-ray and DVD. More info (and restoration demo video) at Gaumont. You can also order via Amazon France. Gaumont is also releasing a Blu-ray and DVD restoration of Feuillade's crime/espionage serial, Tih-Minh (1918), with subtitles and a 15-min featurette (Amazon). I reached out to Kino and Flicker Alley re: Region 1 distribution, but they said no plans as yet. Fans can order from Amazon and Gaumont in France. Great news! I sure wish my late-friend, Richard Sala, could be here for this.
