THE PRISONER ART EDITION

Upcoming release: Jack Kirby: The Prisoner Original Art Edition. Spy Vibe announced this upcoming book a while back, but I want to make sure Spy Vibers don't let it slip off their radar. After all, it's been an amazing six months of Prisoner 50th anniversary releases and events! Coming this July, Titan Books will publish a hardcover edition collecting Jack Kirby and Gil Kane's rare art for a Prisoner comic project. From the press release: "Drawn by two of the true great comic book legends, Jack Kirby and Gil Kane, this is a facsimile collection of a ”long-lost,” unpublished legendary comic book based on the cult classic 1967 British TV show, The Prisoner. The amazing series was co-created, written, and directed by the star, Patrick McGoohan (Scanners, Braveheart). Produced oversized to best show off the pages, like a mini Studio Edition or Artist's Edition." More info at Bud's Art Books and Amazon. Enjoy!

DICK TRACY CASES

New release: The Sunday Press continues its mission to archive and celebrate our comic strip heritage with classic titles gloriously archived at their original print size. For their new edition they have turned to Chester Gould's detective strip, Dick Tracy! Tracy's world is filled with fast-pace action, grit, gadgets, and the most colorful rogue's gallery of villains. From the press release: "In the early 1930s, Chester Gould dramatically altered the comics landscape with a new style of gritty realism torn from Chicago's headlines. With this new kind of storytelling came a new way of coloring comics, a style as bold and vibrant as the stories themselves. Now for the first time, Sunday Press presents Dick Tracy in the original colors and full tabloid size-and just in time for Tracy's 85th birthday. This collection of Sunday newspaper comics from 1931 to 1939 features Gould's most infamous villains of the decade in four complete stories, plus forty more fabulous Sunday pages. Experience the adventures of the world's most famous comic strip detective just as they appeared more than three-quarters of a century ago." Oversized HC. More info at Amazon and Sunday Press. If you like Dick Tracy, check out the contemporary graphic novels by the maestro of macabre mystery, Richard Sala, at Fantagraphics Books (see our interviews and spotlight links below). In other news, my next episode on Cocktail Nation is coming up! In the meantime, you can hear Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service). In each segment I do a short introduction to a film or TV series and share some classic (often rare) music. Don't miss the James Bond caption contest from Ian Fleming Publications (ends June 18th)! MARGARET NOLAN: GOLDEN GIRL

Goldfinger was released 50 years ago this week. The movie's perfect cocktail of girls, guns, and gadgets established the winning formula that launched a spy craze around the world. Some of the most indelible memories from Goldfinger come from the film's title sequence and promotional imagery (posters, LPs, etc), which featured actress Margaret Nolan painted in gold. She also appeared as Dink in the opening Miami sequence. Nolan has a website that features signed photos and really cool photomontage pieces inspired by her career. Her style of collaging is beautifully rooted in a 1960s aesthetic you would find in work by other artists from the era. She prefaces her work with an excellent quote by John Berger (Ways of Seeing), which I've included in my review below. My sister site, Illustrated 007, recently chatted with her about shooting the Bond title sequence with Robert Brownjohn. Congrats to Nolan and the Goldfinger team on their anniversary! Fans can meet Margaret Nolan today at the London Film Convention, Classic British Film & Television Day (Sept 20th).

Margaret Nolan shares the distinction with actress Shirley Eaton as an iconic Bond girl, remembered as a partially nude figure covered in gold. The image is stunning (and stirring), but also speaks to the complex nature of female roles in society. Isn't it odd that would should love this image of woman-as-statue, a kind of kinky cybernaut, frozen forever in the state of distant allure. Nolan's own artwork reflects this dichotomy of beauty and self-appraisal. She quotes John Berger (Ways of Seeing/1972) in the introduction to her gallery page: "To be born a woman has been to be born, within an allotted and confined space, into the keeping of men… this has been at the cost of a woman's self being split into two… she must continuously watch herself… and so she comes to consider the surveyor and the surveyed within her as the two constituent yet always distinct elements of her identity as a woman. Men look at women, women watch themselves being looked at… her own sense of being in herself is supplanted by a sense of being appreciated as herself by another… thus she turns herself into an object- and most particularly an object of vision; a 'sight'." Her method of cutting reminds me slightly of self-image drawings I've seen made by women in therapy, which often depict two selves: the sparkly partner ready to please and the private inner-self watching from within. Below: "Stars in Her Eyes" by Margaret Nolan.

S.H.I.E.L.D. STERANKO ARTIST EDITIONS

Fans of Steranko's orignal Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. are celebrating tonight! IDW has announced they will be printing two S.H.I.E.L.D. Artist Editions. From IDW: "Legendary comics artist Jim Steranko will be the subject of not one but two Artist's Editions from IDW Publishing, with nearly all pages shot from the artist's personal art collection. Steranko, one of the great innovators in comics history, produced a comparatively small body of work for the House of Ideas from the mid-1960s to the early '70s, most notably his runs on Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain America.
"

"The first volume, The Steranko Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Artist's Edition, will feature the initial twelve stories by Steranko that appeared in Strange Tales #151 through #162. All of these stories were drawn in the "twice up" format, meaning the original art is rendered at twice the size of the printed comic. The final book will measure 15 x 22 inches and is currently scheduled for release in May of 2014.

"I believe that I changed Nick Fury's life as much as he changed mine," Steranko says, "and looking over the original art again celebrates a flood of memories evincing the kind of rampant, seismic creativity that went into their creation. I can see my artistic evolution expand by the story, even by the page, and revisiting that experience can be simultaneously reassuring and shocking-a kind of microcosm of comic book history. As one of the architects of the Marvel Age, I'm pleased to share the sweep and nuance of the S.H.I.E.L.D. epic with all my fans and friends."

The second volume, The Steranko Nick Fury and Captain America Artist's Edition, will collect the remaining Nick Fury stories from Strange Tales 163-168, as well as issues 1, 3, and 5 of the Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. comic series. As icing on the cake, Steranko's three stellar issues of Captain America will also be included. This volume will measure 12 x 17 inches, and the release date is still to be determined."

"WHAT IS AN ARTIST'S EDITION?  AN ARTIST'S EDITION PRESENTS COMPLETE STORIES WITH EACH PAGE SCANNED FROM THE ACTUAL ORIGINAL ART.
While appearing to be in black and white, each page was scanned in color to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art-for instance, corrections and blue pencils. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board."
