MONDRIAAN 66

Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944) is celebrated for his post-1920 theories regarding pure color, flat forms, and dynamic tension. His work inspired fashion by Yves Saint Laurent and pop minimalism in the 1960s. Mondriaan's legacy continues to serve as a shorthand for swinging sixties style. The iconic Mondriaan dress was designed by Yves Saint Laurent (1936-2008) in Fall '65, and as we can see by the images below, the design's impact rippled through the culture immediately. FAB examples include Lady Penelope's mod outfit chosen by Sylvia Anderson for Thunderbirds (1966), the Oldsmobile Tornado show in Detroit (1966), Our Man Flint (1966), Yves Saint Laurent patterns (1966), and various fashion shoots. Laurent's Dress description from The Met: "As the sack dress evolved in the 1960s into a modified form, the shift, Saint Laurent realized that the dress's planarity was an ideal field for color blocks. Knowing the flat planes of the 1960s canvases acheived by contemporary artists in the lineage of Mondriaan, Saint Laurent made the historical case for the artistic sensibility of his time. Yet he also demonstrated a feat of dressmaking, setting in each block of jersey, piecing in order to create the semblance of the Mondriaan order and to accommodate the body imperceptibly by hiding all the shaping in the grid of seams." Enjoy!

FASHION MYSTERY 1: BRUNO BENINI

Fashion mystery part one: Today our spotlight is on Australian-Italian photographer Bruno Benini. An archive of his works was acquired by the Powerhouse Museum and the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences in Sydney about ten years ago. Museum curator Anne-Marie Van de Ven expressed just how vital fashion images can be as both time capsules and records of our changing culture when she wrote: "Fashion photographs are good indicators of social change. By their very nature and purpose, fashion photographs are created and designed to document and promote change by capturing or creating the total look, mood or attitudes of the moment. Within their frames (if they’re not shot in the studio which is the case for so many post-WWII photographs) they also frequently document (by capturing) natural, urban, rural, built and interior environments. These images then become highly evocative references to people, places, social, technological, environmental and industrial change at different points in time. With many of Benini’s shots also taken overseas, change of another nature is also revealed - that of Australia’s complex, multicultural society, it’s global aspirations and it’s trade, manufacturing and cultural links with the rest of the world." The highlight for me in the Benini collection is this image of model Jan Stewart (1965 Mannequin of the Year and 1967 Model of the Year). Note that the original negative was a medium-format square image, but the final print was cropped into a vertical. For the photo Stewart wore a drop-waste Mondrian-inspired mini dress- credited to Simona for Sportsgirl. But Spy Vibers will surely recognize the outfit from another source! Tune into my next post for details! As with many Mod designs, the geometric lines helped accentuate that slim, stick-figure vibe of the era. Dressed in this outfit, Stewart would have been right at home beside Elsa Martinelli in The 10th Victim. The Powerhouse museum mounted a large exhibition of Benini's photographs in 2010-11. More info here. Incidentally, the museum is currently running the international Sherlock Holmes exhibit, so check it out if you are down under. In other Australia-related news, my episodes of the Cocktail Nation radio show are now live: Episode #1 (Danger Man) and Episode #2 (The 10th Victim), Epsiode #3 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service) Episode #4 (Roger Moore/The Saint), Episode #5 (The Avengers).

SYLVIA ANDERSON R.I.P.

The Spy Vibe world lost another great this week. Sylvia Anderson, co-creator with Gerry Anderson) of classic series like Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90, UFO, and Space 1999, died at the age of eighty-eight. In addition to voicing stylish spy Lady Penelope in Thunderbirds, Anderson was an integral creative force in all of their projects, often contributing to character development and to the fashion design that made their Century 21 productions so groundbreaking and influential. She was one of the early adopters of the Space-Age look, dressing her characters in cutting-edge synthetic fabrics and embracing iconic elements like silver outfits, mod boots, mini skirts, customizable garments, transparent helmets and visors, Nehru jackets, and Mondrian/Laurent-inspired gear. Sylvia Anderson helped define well-dressed adventure in the 1960s. Spy Vibe sends condolences to Sylvia's family and to fellow fans around the world. More info at Fanderson. FLASH MOTOR

I really enjoy looking at old auto show photographs from the late 1950s and 1960s. Not only do they capture a time when each brand had a unique vision and style, but they also show our inevitable need to link transportation and design to notions of futurism and youth. Sport cars were staged especially in dynamic settings, with ultra flash geometric shapes, black, silver, and industrial lighting arrays that promoted individual momentum over the post-war vision of family functionality. I don't know when the "car girl' tradition started, but the ladies certainly completed the Hefner-like fantasy devoted to speed, pleasure, and technology. Oldsmobile hit the target when they promoted their line with the slogan "Olds is Young!" Even the 1964 Dodge pickup was hosted by a sporty gal dressed in Space-Age silver boots and jumpsuit. The best of this lot is a 1966 image depicting models dressed in Yves Saint Laurent-style fashion inspired by Mondrian (originals or copies?). Happy Saturday, Spy Vibers! Where will you adventure this weekend? Enjoy!
