SPY VIBE RADIO: HUNTER

Greeting, Spy Vibers! I've had a busy time in the Spy Vibe lair getting my art students ready for their annual fall exhibit. But I'm happy to report that I've also been making good progress on the upcoming Spy Vibe book! I'll share more on that when I can. I've been meaning to mention that my latest episode for the Cocktail Nation radio show is up. In this segment I introduced the rare Sixties TV program, Hunter, and played some of the soundtrack. Almost a year before the debut of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service starring Aussie, George Lazenby, Crawford Productions in Melbourne produced its own home-grown spy show. Hunter was steeped in espionage, from missiles and code phrases to assassination plots, and its dynamic action was grounded in Cold War Australia. This provided the Crawford team with a chance to situate stories within the unique local landscape and around cultural centers, as well as to do some memorable filming in Singapore. Hunter followed the adventures of a counterespionage agent (Hunter 5), portrayed by Tony Ward, who worked for a subdivision of C.O.S.M.I.C. (Commonwealth Office of Security & Military Intelligence Co-ordination). Hunter’s characterization also had a local quality, with a natural and outgoing disposition; while Bond sniffed at disappointing brandies, Hunter happily shared bottles of beer with his mates -and his enemies. The baddies in the piece were the Council for the Unification of the Communist World (A.K.A. “The Council”). Their top operative was an enigmatic agent named Kragg, played by Gerard Kennedy, whose icy exterior and many disguises made him a popular character among viewers. SPY VIBE RADIO: PHANTOM AGENTS

My new episode of Cocktail Nation radio is live! This month I spotlight the fab series from Japan, Ninja Butai Gekko (Ninja Unit Moonlight/1964-1966). This mid-sixties show was a cool mix of ninja action, illusions, fantasy, and spy conventions. Stories centered around a team of modern-day ninja, who battled various evil doers and criminal organizations bent on destroying the world (my fave baddie wore phantasmic light, Mod sunglasses and shot daggers out of his top hat!). Add the amazing jazz and surf guitar soundtrack by Chumei Watanabe (Kikaida, Supaidaman) and you have ultra Spy Vibe! I introduce the series and play a number of cues from the soundtrack on Cocktail Nation here. See the trailer below from the show's 1964 film to get you in the mood. I want to dedicate this episode especially to our readers in South American and Australia (hello fellow Shintaro Samurai fans!), where the program found its big dedicated base as Los Agentes Fantasmas and Phantom Agents.
