CHECK IN

Greetings Spy Vibers! I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. As usual, teaching has kept me mighty busy lately. My photography and film students have been working on various experiments with practical optical effects to diffuse light and focus, and we're slowly gearing up for their own end-of-year projects. I returned to campus this week for in-person instruction for the first time in over a year. It was a bit weird to be in rooms with other people, but we've scheduled them to minimize numbers and contact. So far so good. In the Spy Vibe world, I'm still working on a comics section of the upcoming book, which gives me a great excuse to look at lots of fun material printed between the 1940s-1960s. The book will also take a look at graphic design and some of the styles and trends that genre works tapped into. Given my background in Japan, my personal favorite part of that story is the artwork produced to package genre works for the Japanese market. It's been a while since I've posted about this, so I though Spy Vibers would enjoy seeing some examples. The publisher behind these editions was Hayakawa, who held licenses to print all the major works in mystery, thriller, and other genres, including properties like James Bond, The Man From UNCLE, The Girl From UNCLE, Flint, Danger Man, Matt Helm, Ellery Queen, Honey West, etc. My upcoming book will go deeper into that story and I'll share some of my massive collection of original paperbacks and magazine covers. PHANTOM NOVELS

New releases: Spy Vibe announced a while back that Hermes Press was re-printing the original Phantom novels from Avon (first published 1972-1975). Hermes began the project last fall and the publisher is releasing the entire series of fifteen paperback books with their original painted covers by artist George Wilson! From the press release: "Coming soon from Hermes Press: The Phantom the Complete Avon pocket books! The Phantom: The Complete Avon Books Volume 1; 6 x 9 inch; starting in August 2016, every other month; $14.99. For the first time ever, the Avon edition of The Phantom is back in print! Hermes Press is proud to announce that they will be publishing all fifteen Avon pocket books, starting in August 2016, every other month! Book one starts off with Lee Falk explaining, via the twentieth Phantom, the histories of the Phantoms that came before the current Ghost Who Walks. Famed artist George Wilson (Dr. Solar, Magnus Robot Fighter, The Phantom) painted all of the covers used for the Avon series, and they are reproduced beautifully to keep all of the details from the original books intact for a new generation of Phans to enjoy! This first exciting book in the series, titled “The Story of The Phantom: The Ghost Who Walks,” tells the story of the childhood and adolescence of the twenty-first Phantom.
