DEITCH MODERN

Summer break is just about over and I've been camped out in the Spy Vibe lair plugging away on research and writing for the upcoming "Spy Vibe" book. The last few days were spent looking at some of the fun Pop Art styled episodes of The Avengers series. Still much to do! Modernist illustrator, cartoonist, and animation director Gene Deitch (1924-1920) crossed my radar again today. Perhaps Spy Vibers have seen his work on projects like Popeye, Tom and Jerry, Alice in Wonderland in Paris, and Nudnik. Deitch also did a cartoon called "The Cat" and illustrated covers for the jazz magazine, Record Changer, between 1940-1951. This work is a great time capsule of the jazz culture and modernist aesthetics of the era. Deitch moved to Prague in 1959 to work on a short called Munro, a collaboration with Julie Feiffer that won them an Oscar. He ended up meeting his future wife there and stayed on for the duration. Creating in Prague with Czech artists suggests some interesting questions about how the workflow and payments were managed during the Cold War. Some samples of his Record Changer artwork below. If you're inspired to see more, Fantagraphics published a collection called The Cat on a Hot Thin Groove, which is currently on sale at Amazon. Fans of jazz and modernism might also enjoy the work of Jim Flora. Enjoy!
