TIKI EVENTS

Event Alerts: Spy Vibers interested in Tiki culture have a range of cool offerings this weekend and extending into the next few months in California. The big event is happening in San Diego, where the annual Tiki Oasis festival offers up a packed schedule of seminars, exhibits, performances, and parties. Tiki Oasis runs through Sunday, so check for more info here. There are also two Tiki museum exhibits currently running. Spy Vibers in northern California can check out Tiki Dreams at the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville. Thanks to my friend Kimberly at Cinebeats, I learned about this cool show and made the trek up there yesterday. It's a beautifully curated exhibit, filled with artifacts and well-written coverage of Tiki culture and its many manifestations in decor, fashion, architecture, cocktails, leisure, and its resurgence in recent decades. For those in the area, the museum is hosting a few fun special events, including an Elvis evening! Some of my favorite areas of the exhibit, of course, were the Les Baxter and Martin Denny LP covers, beautifully designed menus from some of the famous Tiki lounges, lots of 2D and 3D artwork, and interior design. I did notice, however, the absence of film/TV artifacts and would have expected to see more references to projects like Hawaiian Eye and South Pacific. There's actually another exhibit  at the museum with kitsch appeal to see while you're there: California roadside attractions! I was especially happy to catch a reference to Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and thought of Paul Reubens, who just passed away. More Napa info here. And for Spy Vibers in southern California, head over to the Catalina Island Museum for an exhibit curated by historian Sven Kirsten, Tall Tiki Tales, running through Aug 20th. Spy Vibers might know Sven's work through his many Tiki art books, including Tiki Pop (Taschen). Check their schedule for special Tiki movie nights! Also at the Catalina museum is a related exhibit, Skirting Issues: Hulu Moves Stateside, on through Sept 24. More info here.
