Greetings, Spy Vibers! I'm back on the fast-moving train again at work and helping my filmmaking and photography students work on projects. I've posted a number of new-release alerts recently and there are more coming soon. Fans of The Persuaders and ITC have some fantastic books and events on the way! I've also been meaning to post links to my summer segments on Cocktail Nation radio. My most recent episode introduced a TV series from the late 1950s called Adventures in Paradise (1959-1962), which was based on James Michener's work (as was South Pacific). Like Hawaiian Eye, the show was part of that era's fascination with exotic locations, Polynesian culture, and Tiki design. The hero of the piece traveled in a boat ("Tiki III"), putting him in contact with various criminals, schemers, and even the occasional spy ring. As I mention on the radio show, one story in particular called "The Bamboo Curtain" (Dec 14, 1959) focused on spies and co-starred Patrick Macnee (The Avengers) and Anne Francis (Honey West)! The lead was played by actor Gardner McKay, whose early career also included having sculpture in the Museum of Modern Art, photography in Life magazine, and even modeling for Richard Avedon. Putting all these elements together, Adventures in Paradise serves as a great time capsule of the Mid-Century.
