New release: After the fantastic release of expanded anniversary CD editions of 007 soundtracks Goldfinger, Live and Let Die, and Octopussy, James Bond fans learned today that two more expanded John Barry scores start shipping soon: The Man with the Golden Gun and Moonraker! From the press release:
The Man with the Golden Gun
Produced by Neil S. Bulk, remixed by Chris Malone from high-resolution digital transfers of 2" tapes provided by MGM and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this 2-CD release, limited to only 5,000 units, showcases the music of The Man With The Golden Gun in thrilling and comprehensive fashion. Disc 1 presents the score in chronological order and features music never before available. This is followed by additional music including source music recorded for the film and the demo take of the title song. Disc 2 presents the original 1974 soundtrack album, newly assembled for this release. The new, exclusive liner notes are by journalist and author Jon Burlingame, and the art design is by Dan Goldwasser.
Moonraker
Produced by Neil S. Bulk, remixed by Mike Matessino from high-resolution digital transfers of 2” tapes provided by MGM, and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this is a special 2-CD release, limited to only 5,000 units. Disc One presents the score in chronological order and features music never before available, followed by source music recorded for the film and additional versions of score cues. Disc 2 presents the original 1979 soundtrack album, newly assembled for this release, followed by alternate versions of the title song, including two early versions with lyrics and vocals by Oscar® and GRAMMY® winner Paul Williams. The exclusive, new liner notes are by film music journalist and author Jon Burlingame and art direction is by Dan Goldwasser.
The expanded John Barry CDs can be ordered from LaLa Land Records and the 007 Store. Fans of later soundtracks can also find expanded editions of Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough. Die Another Day is currently sold out. One of my recent episodes of the Cocktail Nation radio series featured music from The Man with the Golden Gun, a personal favorite. I'm so happy to see these soundtracks receiving the attention they deserve. So far the anniversary editions have featured a much better range and balance than previous CDs, not to mention original film sequencing and all the extra treasures included. I'd love to see the rest of the John Barry 007 films added to this project. And like many Bond fans, I'm hoping we'll see this kind of attention, especially to original sound mixes, when the movies eventually make it to 4k discs.
