Celebrating Roger Moore’s birthday today, I keep thinking about something Paul McCartney said about admiring Elvis as a kid, that Presley “just looked perfect.” Growing up with reruns of The Saint, I looked to Moore with a similar kind of attention. Not only did he fill those stylish suits with an archetypal heroic physique, he also had a perfectly heroic haircut that swooped back across his head and a roguish charm. He was famous for playing pranks on his colleagues and I think that playfulness also translated to his performances. I loved how he began each story, raising an eyebrow to the camera and inviting us into that deliciously decadent world of adventurous 60s jet setters. And the notion of being a "jet setter" didn't just seem like grist for adventure to me as a young boy, it seemed like a career option! It was all so glamorous. The Volvo P1800. The gorgeous actresses. Exotic locations. The world of The Saint was “just perfect” and it introduced me, along with The Avengers, to a life-long passion for stylish action. I recently rewatched the entire Saint series and once again found myself bowled over. There are many actors I think work on other levels, shall we say, but maybe none are quite as FUN to spend time with than Roger Moore.
Roger Moore was also my first theater Bond (either MWTGG or TSWLM; it's a blur now). Though the clothes (and cars) in the 70s were slightly less cool, I remember being completely swept up by the soundtrack music, the gun barrel opening, the title sequences, and most of all, Roger’s charm. Though I enjoy all of the 007 actors, Roger Moore carried a sense of fun that I hold dear. Despite periods when I thought I needed 007 to be edgy and serious, I have ultimately come to realize that the world of 007 offers something for every mood. I tend to re-watch The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker as a double feature every year or two and they always bring me back to those early experiences as a kid, cheering the hero, thrilled by the action and music, and swept away by that unique charm of his. It's odd, but they may be my most-watched Bonds? Even though I think there are better Bond movies (OHMSS, FRWL), I guess I'm ultimately an even greater Roger Moore fan.
